(PRE-GAME) @Butler, Sat., Feb. 5, 12 Noon, FS-1

Quick turnaround from a Thurday night game in DC to a Saturday noon tip at Hinkle. Hinkle has always been a house of horrors for us, haven't won there since 2014 but took them to OT last year.

I'm guessing the line opens PK but wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 1.5 in either direction

Like I told Duke, I'm hoping for a hard fought, nail biting 1 or 2 point win.

I do not expect us to win.  Butler is playing much better and are a tough out at hinkle.  I am not getting sucked back in again until we show we can beat a good basketball team.

Expecting a loss, and not expecting it to be close. We are horrible @ Butler, and this game is such a quick turnaround from our previous game, which also puts us at a disadvantage.

Hopefully Butler is the team.

I think our guys realize that it is due or die time for any postseason play.

SJ press release

The Bulldogs are led offensively by sophomore guard Chuck Harris, the team’s only double figure scorer at 11.0 points per game.  Senior forward Bryce Golden and freshman guard Jayden Taylor are chipping 9.0 points per outing. Saturday’s contest will be a clash of styles.

St. John’s enters the game ranked fourth in the nation in adjusted tempo according to KenPom.  Butler, on the other hand, ranks 333rd.  The Bulldogs’ average possession length of 19.3 seconds ranks 335th in Division I.  The Johnnies (14.6 seconds) trail only Gonzaga in that category. St. John’s will look to snap a lengthy losing streak inside Hinkle Fieldhouse, having dropped seven straight on the road against the Bulldogs dating back to 2014-15.  Seven of those defeats were by 20 or more points.

The Red Storm has won only once inside the college basketball cathedral, a 69-52 win in the first year of the newly realigned BIG EAST. The Red Storm is 7-10 all-time against Butler with all but one of those games coming as conference foes.  Before 2013, the only meeting between the teams came in the opening round of the 1958 NIT, a 76-68 win for the Johnnies at Madison Square Garden.

To me this is essentially a repeat of the Creighton game.  On the road in a place with good home-court advantage against a team that usually executes and moves the ball well.  The challenges will be to

(1) get the game at our pace (which I think will be a bigger advantage against Butler than it is against Creighton which can play that way better than Butler);
(2) defend the perimeter against a team that may move the ball faster than we can scramble; and
(3) be efficient offensively (Posh continuing to use and hit the mid-range jumper, Champ carrying over from the Georgetown game, contributions from a third scorer (probably Wheeler) and the bench.

This team wins when it brings defensive energy, gets good looks and converts those looks into points.  If it lacks defensive energy and the offense has too many unproductive drives to the basket or ill-advised 3s, things don't go well.

X-factor in this game is Aaron Thompson, he's good, experienced, and gave Posh (and us) all sorts of trouble last year.  The move may be to try Mathis or Wusu on him and let Posh harass Chuck Harris.

This is not a game I expect to win, unfortunately - but it could be a W if everything goes well.

So what is more meaningless, adjusted tempo or exit velocity?

Exit velocity, because that's entirely meaningless.

Tempo is actually relevant ... if executed well.

We're overdue to win at Butler
We need to break the "Hinkle Jinx"
What better time to do it than tomorrow?
LET'S GO JOHNNIES!!!!!

Our advantage of being a slight 329 spots higher than Butler in adjusted tempo will hopefully be the difference. /media/kunena/emoticons/devil.png

Have a feelin', Wheeler's jumpin' off the ceilin', in Hinkle.

Hey he transferred from a Bigger name Indiana University to come to us, so maybe he sees an opportunity to let the Hoosier State see what they are missing.

Hey, anyway, no big insight there.

Let's Go Johnnies!

This is encouraging.  Butler should be favored by 2.  Vegas thinks the Johnnies are winning this one!!!!!!!

My only prediction is that if we lose Anderson will be eviscerated here and if we win everyone will say so what they are no good anyway.

I don’t believe in making risky predictions.
