Ponds & Omar Cook
Cruel and unusual post for those of us deprived of ever seeing Hatten - Cook backcourt.
Cook left too early before he developed a complete game. I am just not as high on Hatten as others here. I liked many other of our backcourts over time.

Utley Cluess, although I didn't see much of it
Carter Rencher - I liked that one
Moses/Jackson - Mullin

Hatten could a lot of things well. I rate him higher than anyone you listed except Jackson and of course Mullin. He didn't have much of a supporting cast, and a coach that lost interest. I also liked the backcourt of Utley and Alagia.

Erich Barkley and Ron Artest were exciting and successful—but, no doubt, travelled a brief college road.
David Cain was excellent. I forget who his backcourt mate was.

Mostly Derek Brown. Cain did what did in his senior year almost single-handedly.

Thanks redken Yeah, I remember when we lost in the NCAAs against Arkansas. Cain was the leader and motor of the Johnnies. Nolan Richardson’sd post-game mantra was the way to beat us was to ‘cut off the head of the snake’. They neutralized Cain in that game and won.

Marcus Hatten was IM not at all humble opinion was one of the six or seven best SJU players has had in my lifetime. The backcourt that're missing here is Utley and Glen Williams.

I always think of the backcourt the year we went to the Elite Eight as Barkley & Bootsy Thornton rather than Barkley & Postell or Barley & Artest.

Next yesr, if Ponds stays, we may have the best and deepest backcourt in SJU history with the addition of Williams and Dixon. With Simon and another guard the backcourt would be deadly. Get a big man and we are cooking with gas.

You might be right, ‘72. Especially if Simon improves his shooting and Shamorie, as well, boosts his 3-point accuracy and both are better finishing, when driving to the hoop.
Add a BE-caliber big guy and we might be scary good.

Backcourt of Reggie Carter and Bernard Rencher very underrated. Their junior year came up a bucket short of the final four. Will always remember Carter's game winner against powerhouse (Pre-K) Duke with Gene Banks and Mike Gminski down in tobacco road.

Based on Mulin's coaching style I would expect to see Ponds , Dixon and Simon on the court at the same time for the majority of minutes along with Clark.

That’s very possible and I think most of us expected that at one point, but our rebounding weakness plagued us all year almost as much as our lack of depth—exposing our shooting lapses.
At key points in many games we were 1-shot and done.
That makes adding a BE-quality big guy critical and would offer the Staff options to mix and match different offensive lineups against different teams—an asset we sorely lacked this year.

Good recall, NC. I'd forgotten about Bootsy. And, yes, that was quite a backcourt.

Definitely one of the best "transfer" backcourts in SJ history. Does anyone know if Bernie still works at St John's? I used to work with his wife Sharon who was one of the finest educators I've ever met.

Best thing Fran ever did was redshirt Bootsy.
