Point guard not?

CNN feed on my phone had article about CRP saying point guard position was no more. Coach likes the spotlight and clearly passing to an open shooter will be in vogue for all STJ players but having someone who can dribble to force a defense out of position will be a skill set that continues to be needed, no matter what you label it.

The point guard position changed back in 1950. Prior to 1950 the point guards played like Dick McGuire using their passing skills to set up teammates ,rarely taking a shot. Then along came Cousy and things began changing.
By the sixties Oscar,West and Clyde were bringing the ball up court , getting by their defender , forcing another defender to help out and then either taking the ball to the rim, taking an open shot or passing the ball to a teammate for an easier shot. The McGuire point guards were over with except for rare cases.
I have never seen the current SJU point guard play but to try to change a scoring point guard to a McGuire type would be insane.

We were often point less from the ouside last year. We definitely won't be pointless this year. Paying too. much attention to CRP spin in the summer might be pointless, but the team won't be. The more on point questions are 1) how long until the defense jells? 2) will the ten stars accept their roles and playing time as undefined as they me? 3) how strong a start does the team get against a gauntlet of tough opponents? 4) how many of them can stay injury free and out of foul trouble?

In that same interview Pitino said that in today's game a player referred to as a "true point guard" is often a guard that cannot shoot well.

If Wilcher stayed at St. John's, would he start at PG or even backup whomever the starting PG is?

Let's leave guys like Brian Hill, Albie schwartz and Mike Moses out of this conversation!

The six big time transfers plus Zuby Prey and even probably Odih has him outside my top 9 at best.
I was assuming no Darling if Wilcher stayed, and I had Darling eight before Pitino admitted that Ian is not the PG. I think Lefty and Ayo really need to bust their asses to keep Odih from being the ninth man.

Wilcher made me so nervous though. If Darling is even 1 percent less stressful than Sim it's a win for me.
