Owens comes back, father shuts up and Tariq has a solid season.

There is a staff change for the better. Don’t ask me how to measure that. :)

Ponds, Dixon, Simon, Owens, Clark, Keita, Roberts, Williams, Trimble (in shape) and hopefully Diakite form a solid and flexible group capable of a Dance invitation. The BE has lost a lot of players.

Land Kofi early & develop a specific plan to fill some key roster changes anticipated, including Simon possibly. Being more planful & less reactive.

With a winning, impressive season, grab some late solid four year players v “transfer mania”

Get a new hobby if all this comes to shit. Enough Fantasy Island musing.

Will Matt be the guy at JFK shouting to Mullin, "The plane Boss. The plane!"?

Would still like a grad transfer power forward, because Owens has too many flaws in his game, but it is nice to see a positive post on this site for a change.

I would sign up for this in a heartbeat. Maybe faster.

There isn’t a lot of choice in not welcoming Owens back. For the most part he’s a contributor when he’s on the court.

Agree this would not be a bad result. In a best case scenario this would give us 11 scholarship players next year (above 10 plus Earlington). In order for us to be significantly improved over this year's group we'd need Williams and especially Keita to be solid contributors along with Trimble, with some combination of Diakite, Roberts & Earlington perhaps providing spot minutes off the bench. Would still love to see us get one big grad transfer or JUCO, but maybe that's unrealistic if Owens returns.

Oversight not including Earlington on my list.

Regardless of his dad, Owens appeared to be a great teammate. I can still recall NYC's photo of him joyously jumping on Amar's back following the win over Butler. Would welcome him back (as, I believe, would his teammates) ... especially since we have no guarantees of landing a graduate transfer big man.

Redken, agree Owens is a great teammate and I too would love to see him back. Just don't want to see us come up with neither Owens or a replacement big. Also, given that we are not sure how much Roberts & Diakite will be ready to contribute would not mind seeing us get Owens and a grad transfer or JUCO who can share time at 4 and 5 with Owens & Keita - although the more I think about it, I recognize that may not be realistic in terms of enough minutes to go around as Clark will likely get some time at 4 as well as 3. Seems like Texas Tech still has plenty of interest in Owens based on article posted earlier today. Guess we'll all breathe a lot easier when we get that first big to commit (or re-commit)!

After initial surprise re Owens requesting his release, it is good to know both sides have communicated during this period. Father loves watching Tariq play, so I would be surprised if he goes to T Tech. Gut says he returns. I am not sure Md. offered him?? We’ll know this week.

Good stuff Paultzman. I'd definitely want TO back. If you can return 4/5 of your top players from a solid team, that sets up for a fast start and a good year. The team played well together in February and no reason to think that wouldn't carry over. This is not the time for an experiment or reboot. You never know how a replacement would gel.

KenPom Year 1- #211
KenPom Year 2- #99
KenPom Year 3- #74

We'd be a Tournament team on paper if he returns.

On another note, any chance that the Nova National Title is impacting TO's decision? I know it's just one game, but no other team in the country can point to a regular season win as impressive as that one. Their Title confirmed that, and maybe TO realized the team isn't that far off.

I agree with you guys, Paultz, NC Johnnie, redken. My favorite KoolAid flavor is grape. Yours?
Would be great to get a good Big rebounding type to commit also, and there seems to be decent minutes to go around—but probably not enough to satisfy a quality Grad Big. Maybe a Juco?
Let’s go Johnnies.

Agree. Would like to see Owens and a graduate transfer big on the roster next year. Until Keita and Roberts prove otherwise, we shouldn't expect too much from either of them this coming season.

Agree completely. Would like to see Owens and a graduate transfer big on the roster next year. Until Keita and Roberts prove otherwise, we shouldn't expect too much from either of them this coming season.[/quote] We all want that. But Paultzman says if we take Owens ,PT will be a problem for Femi and other talented bigs and it would be hard to get both. I think I would rather have Femi over Owens. W Owens you would have to worry about giving him his perimeter shots. W Femi you have a banger. But, like you, would love to get both, but unlikely.

If Owens comes back, he goes into the starting lineup along with Clark, Simon and Ponds. We would need to replace the points scored by Ahmed. Hopefully we get this from Dixon and Williams. We need Roberts and Keita to hold there own on the boards when they have to play. We don't really need them to score a lot. Once the team got over the loss of Lovett they played most games with Trimble playing 10+ minutes often 20+ wit him doing very little offensively. See his stats below in the wins against Duke, Nova and Butler. Adding a player who can score and rebound like Femi would still be huge.

If our TO (ironic initials) decides to grace us with his presence next season I would hope that CM is sure that he is all in with St. John's. This should not be about "getting TO his perimeter shots" or minutes. This should be about winning and putting the team in the best position to win so they all look good. I don't know how you do that but that is between TO and CM.
I am not sure how his release works but does CM have to take him back if he decides the kid is not all in? I have no idea where this guy's head is. I like him, he's worked hard, but... the possible transfer and rationale for it have escaped me. I would think an agreement to have him back should be mutual. We don't need another mid-season bail-out if he or his father become dissatisfied.

Perhaps we need to re-examine our "release and return" policy. Personally, when a player asks for his release I would plan for a better or equal player as a replacement. If we can't get that player then we have a recruiting problem with grad transfers. We bombed last year and if we bomb this year we are not casting a wide enough net. Not having a natural 5 on the team should be an incentive for a true center to get immediate minutes. Owens or no Owens a player like Femi should be a team effort starting with Mitch and Mullin and not with Matt.

If Marvin Clark is only used 30 instead of forty minutes and Tariq gets some time at the three, then maybe Femi fits right in.
