Patrick Ewing Gives $3.3 Million Gift To GU

Wonderful gesture on Ewing's part. No doubt made in large part out of his lose, admiration and respect for JTII. I've long sensed that most of our most famous and successful athletic alumni-ironically Jayson Williams being the exception-give very little back in time and donations after their time here. Wondering if my sense is correct?

Meant to say "no doubt made out of his love.........."

Patrick Ewing at Gtown vs Abe Keita for us.

The contributions to the respective programs speak for themselves

Fortunately you are not correct. Certain bball players have made very large comparable gifts but have insisted on anonymity. I can't say any more and must respect confidentiality.

What are your expectations from the alum? I personally don't think they owe the university anything, but that's just me....

I never said that they owe the school anything, I only said that it was my sense that many don't give back. I don't owe the school's that I attended and that my children attended a dime. However that doesn't prevent me from donating and attending school benefits, for a variety of reasons. North commented that some do and don't want publicity for it. Fair enough. This has been discussed before, IMO our more famous athletic alumni don't have the same presence at the school as other school's do.

Just curious, has Chris Mullin ever donated any funds to his alma mater?

Not that I've ever heard of, but the cognoscenti may know otherwise.

It would be nice to see some SJU basketball grads scoring on the donation
clock. But, then again, it would be nice to see everyone on this board contributing a modest proportion of their own discretionary income to the
school or the just the athletic departments.
Hell, I guess I would settle for a good proportion of the alumni and student body being selfish and buying themselves some entertainment like a Big East game at the Garden. I know we've beat it to death about the calibre of play being the key, but it is such a let down to drive down from North of Albany three or four times a year only to see the wide open spaces in the Garden and at Alumni Hall.
I guess as a Jet and Met fan I endure mediocrity well and still cheer on
my teams. Maybe that's a naive vice instead of a virtue. Still, at some point the lack of support, both financial and in attendance, becomes a self-fulfilling dynamic, an accelerating cycle, which may be significantly contributing to the lack of attraction some rising stars perceive when they list the pros and cons of school selection.
As i write this I recall I'm WAY off thread and will shut up. Keep them millions coming Patrick...even if its to the hated Hoyas.

If Jayson Williams' $86 million contract hadn't been divided between his ex-wife, his defense team and his victim's kin, then I think he would have given a boatload of money to St. John's.

It is time for St.John's alums and friends to put feelings related to the Harrington failures behind us and renew our support for St. John's University. I will increase my contribution to support St. John's President Bobby Gempesaw.

How is Bobby rated by Rivals Otis? :)

How is Bobby [Gempesaw] rated by Rivals Otis? :)

Bobby was highly rated as a potential point person when he committed to StJohn's. He had had several opportunities to go to other schools and be the point but was content to serve in a key reserve role as Provost at Miami Ohio. I will defer to The Honorable "JerseyShoreJohnny" for comments since he has been able to scout him in person.
