O-Block-Pa

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/statistics

3rd in the country in blocks per game. not bad for a freshman. Keep up the good work!!

The team is second in the nation. We probably would end up being #1 in the nation in blocks, if Sanchez end up being eligible.

Nevertheless, you see the potential oozing out of a kid like Obekpa. Hopefully, he has another block party tonight in Queens.

hey had that nickname in my head for awhile, didnt see your post....great minds think alike....GO JOHNNIES !!!

When he, Sampson, and Balamou reject shots, we almost always get the ball back too, which leads to instant offense for us. That's what seperates the great shot blokers from the good ones, IMO.

Also, Obekpa doesn't need to get blocks to be a defensive impact. When he checked in to the Florida Gulf Coast game in the 2nd half, I saw nuemerous times where FGCU was looking to go inside (which they had success with up until that point), only to stop in his tracks because Chris was there, and pass it out to the perimiter. Almost always, FGCU didn't get as good a look at the hoop for the rest of the possession. Sometimes, just his presence underneath will be enough.

I love how the student section now has an official "Obekpa" sign just like a "K" sign in baseball for strikeouts. Every block he gets, they add a "B"

i.e if he gets 5 blocks it will read

"OBBBBBEKPA"

Great idea!

Now, if we could only rebound................

Not sure I've ever seen a big with more blocks (thirty-five) than rebounds (thirty-four) and ALMOST as many points (thirty-seven)!

By the way, once gain by my count, the official scorers shorted Chris by two blocks. I've now got him with 9 more this sesaon than he's been credited with....

hadn't heard this until today: at 6'9 he's got a 90" wing span (7'5"). same height and wing span as Bill Russell. Manute Bol (RIP) had 102"

My comment wasn't about Chris, but rather the whole team.

Anyone notice that he can hit a jumper from about 17 feet out if left open? I noticed that in a few games. The two that I can remember is the Murray St and NJIT games.

He also did it against Detroit.

He really has an excellent touch on his shot. Needs to work on not fading away but im sure it will be corrected in time, His potential is off the charts.

Everyone recalls the spin move for a dunk yesterday, but I was also impressed with his 1st half bank-shot jumper. It was legit clean and efficient shot.... He should try to work on eliminating his almost automatic fade/fall backwards motion that he has has on the few jumpers we've seen. However, he clearly has the hand coordination to be a very effective spot-up shooter. It bodes well for his professional future. A jump shot is the easiest thing you can add to your repertoire to become a complete player. Adding a 7'5'' wingspan, instinctual timing and quickness off your feet are impossible to add.

You're right about the fade. I was at the game yesterday with my son, and even in warm ups when he was taking some threes, he faded the same way on every shot. Coaches will have to break him of that as he seems comfortable shooting that way and likely won't change it on his own.

And maybe shouldn't; whatever works

Olajuwon was deadly with his fadeaway. I agree, whatever works.
