So an Irish-Catholic kid from Queens rises from poverty, works his way through St. John's and becomes a distinguished City Councilman whose focus seems to be helping the less fortunate.
Sounds like a great SJU success story.
But he's gay. And he's married to his longtime partner. And he openly advocates for gay issues especially marriage equality.
So what does SJU do with an alum like Van Bramer? Will it eventually celebrate accomplishments with an article in the alumni magazine or perhaps an honorary degree down the road?
Or do they remain silent because who he is and some of what he advocates for goes against some of the church's tenets?
*So far the only thing I found from the university is a press release in which Van Bramer issues a proclamation celebrating the school's mock trial team and discusses his own fond memories of competing on the team when he was a student.
