NY Post Interview with Fran Fraschilla

I agree with Fraschilla, I think we lucked into a very good coach. I was not enamored with any of the other candidates, and I definitely did want to see the university buyout another coaches contract to bring them here (i.e. Hurley/Cluess).
 
Yeah, an experienced professional (Mike Cragg) opted for substance over sizzle in hiring CMA.

The fact is that the last 3 StJohn’s coaches hired before CMA were “Hail Mary hires” that in hindsight wold likely not have been made by an experienced AD ....... the hire after Jarvis (Roberts) had no D1 head coaching experience yet was hired to take over a scandal ridden program headed for NCAA probation, his successor (Lavin) had been out of coaching for 7 years after being fired from his only Head coaching job, and his successor (Mullin) had absolutely no prior coaching or recruiting whatsoever.

I believe that CMA is the right man to make StJohn’s basketball competitive again.

I completely believe in CMA from an effort, system, experience, etc. perspective, however he will have to really get some good recruits and consistently to succeed here. With Lavin we had a good recruiter at first but no coaching. Then we had Mullin who recruited just well enough early on to avoid making the coaching inability noticeable. Now we have CMA who has not yet proven to be a legit Big East recruiter on par with everyone else, however he appears to be a solid coach. We've had some very talented recruits come here, but no real coaches. It would be the first time we've had a coach in decades who can recruit AND coach if he proves he can get top 150 kids on the reg. Let's hope, because I don't see him succeeding here if he can't get those kids.

I know it’s one step at a time my friend, but I sure hope he can do a lot more than just make us competitive again. I’m hoping he can “make St. John’s great again!” lol
