NY Post Article - Takeaways/ Big Men Status

Attention, Redmen coaches.

http://nypost.com/2016/11/26/3-st-johns-takeaways-what-happened-to-their-big-men/

The in game adjustments so far have been Mullin and Richmond mumbling to each other and the kid saying to himself " but that's not what I just drew up on the white board". ;) maybe a team killing you inside could have used some zone defense?

Aren't you the same guy who said Mullin and staff couldn't coach a zone defense? ;)

I thought this was a very good article by Zach and pretty much summed up a lot of peoples feelings. It almost feels like he reads the sites to gauge how people are feeling :)

Of course I am! I'm emphazing the fact that our "biggy smalls" are getting killed in the interior defense and a more experienced staff would have thrown in a simple 2-3 for a twist. Maybe when they used it a couple of times last year it was Slice's brainchild. It is what it is and it could be worse. Lavin would have benched the entire front line, including Bashir, and started Alibegovic, Mussini and Freudenberg to motivate them. Of course all our Trump supporting fans would have liked and hated that move. They would have hated it if their student visas were Fcked up and got deported. :cheer:

Ah, Ok, gotcha.

It is a decent article. However, he should be careful with his assumption that players/coaches "will improve". We all hope and pray they will improve but sometimes it doesn't go that way. "Improving" is based on a lot of factors, for example "hard work", "coaching" etc. So far, (and it is early) Sima and Yakwe are still struggling mightily against the better opposition. We are not really on the inside to see the work CM is doing as a coach. This is year two for him. The season will have to play out and we will see where we are at the end. Yes early signs are disappointing (wouldn't it have been nice to win one of those games?). We have no choice but to watch it unfold until the end of the season.

I think it is important for CM and staff to keep the team together no matter what happens (wins or loss wise). For those watching the game versus ODU there were a couple of times I saw some signs of frustration (Ponds throwing up his hands when Ellison didn't look for a pass on a breakaway). This is a test for CM. He needs to keep that from happening. Its ok for us to verbally kill each other on Redmen.com but team unity and belief in each other (win or lose) must remain or longer term damage to the team will hold back development.

And who lead the team in rebounds against ODU??? PONDS @ 6'1! I was hoping one of our bigs would turn into Delgado from SHU but I guess I gotta stop hitting the pipe.

Absence of a board clearing big obviously negatively impacts our speed. If we had someone like a Delgado, Ponds & LoVett would generate a lot of easy buckets on the break. Easy baskets are gold on an offensively challenged squad like SJU.

One Division I coach who faced St. John's in Bahamas believes they should play Tariq Owens more. #sjubb

That same coach thinks St. John's has terrific young backcourt in Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds but teams will game plan for them.

Point being, LoVett and Ponds are obvious strength of team. Opponents know it. Will be hard for them. Need help. #sjubb

Suspect this coach is Will Wade of VCU, just a guess.

Interestingly, I don't think we have gotten the turnovers/easy baskets I expected from the quickness of Ponds and Lovett. I figured Ponds and Lovett would force a lot on their own. This has not been the case. Not sure we can completely blame the post players for that.

.
The guys that blow the whistles for fouls disagree :)

To be fair, if Ponds/Lovett weren't always having to join the rebounding parade, they could get some better outlet passes which is I think Paultz was pointing out.

If I'm not mistaken Ponds has outrebounded Sima this year and he isn't too far behind him in blocks.

Interesting that he got that feedback on Owens. He's a max effort guy which is easy to root for, but I had begun calling him Tariq "Second Chance" Owens by the end of the Bahamas due to the amount of those types of points he was allowing. He wasn't alone, but seemed to be the leader in that regard and soft points allowed due to poor positioning against mostly smaller, stronger players, which I suspect may be the type of player that is a recurring challenge for our frontline this season.

Wonder if the coach saw mere threat to shoot outside of 5 feet and more fluidity in pick and roll game from Owens with Lovett/Ponds as something their team had to at least consider on a scouting report, hence the comment. Hard to see much distinguishing Sima/Yawke/Owens performance right now.

Am hoping we get improvement from all clearly, but think Yawke is closest against premium competition. 10 blocks/9 boards against MSU/VCU was impactful. He's all motor too, don't think he has the type of game where teams are adjusting to him in year 2, so have to think he has more closer to those double-double type games we got from him in conference play last year. Speculation, but seems like he might be in a situation where he is thinking too much on offense after summer (presumably) spent talking about diversifying his offensive game and this has perhaps shaken confidence given lack of early season results. Simplifying back to catching/o-boarding and attacking the rim aggressively might build confidence and actually assist in more varied offense emerging.

I know we are early in the season but that's pathetic.

Again based solely on potential, I would throw Yakwe out there for 30 minutes and basically rotate Sima with Owens. Maybe if he knows he is going to play a set amount of minutes Yakwe can relax and play like he did last year.
