NY Post article 11/23

I think the plume is off the rose! Curious as to what direction the administration will go with Lavin. Can Gempeshaw see thru this guy, or are they possibly satisfied with his results to date. The other night at the LIU game in observing our roster, I feel that we have a great deal of talent that he cannot harness. Is it just bad coaching, or is it that these players just don't get it! Perplexed!
 
Even though Phil is the TV guy, he is asking the same question we have been asking.

I don't buy his arguments every coach in the country has the same problems and you can say I am paranoid but I think the big name TV drawing teams get a bye on ncaa investigations. I think Lavin has done fine. I think he got sidetracked with cancer and it set us back. That being said he needs a better x and o guy.

True, the big name guys get a bye, otherwise North Carolina would be banned forever. It's business.

False, he doesn't need a better x and o guy. Nobody said that when we were beating ranked teams a few years ago. He needs a guy like Dunlap who had a heavy hand. Lavin has the team in LALA land most of the time with his laid back "teaching" style.

It wasn't dunlap's so called heavy hand, it was his x and o ability and strategy that turned the trick for norm's senior group and the next year

What trick did he turn the next year(after Norm's kids graduated)? We went 13-19(6-12) that year. Granted he had a very young team and depleted team, but don't think think he deserves accolades for that team's results.
 
We barely were able to field a team and they were FR in the former BE. Dunlap did a great job.
 
I keep hearing how if Lavin just gets a good x and o asst everything will be just fine. Well it won't. Having a good x and o asst, just like having a good defensive specialist(IE Al Lobalbo) and a good recruiting asst (IE Norm at K) are all part of having an well balanced and effective staff which will compliment a good head coach. However good assistants can't compensate for a poor head coach.

Not saying he did a bad job, just saying I don't think he did anything to deserve accolades. IMO he gets a complete pass on that year.

I agree Monte. Maybe it's because I'm old and don't expect to see SJ ever winning an NCAA tournament, but I want a team with guys who develop every year, a team that gives visiting teams "fits" because they are constantly pressing and trapping, a team that has guys with defined roles (not just a bunch of athletes)and a team that plays great " team basketball." That takes a coach/staff who recruits kids who want to learn, a coach/staff who knows how to run a practice and I'm not at all sure Lavin can accomplish that.

Team has talent? Yes, also lacks size and the ability to shoot the ball. That's not easy to coach around. That's on coach, as is blowing the 2014 class. That's my first negative post on him since he's been here. Not unreasonable to feel he should have come away with 2 players that could have helped some this year and down the road. How Dlo and CO going to stay on the court when Dom might be the only other guy pitching in with the dirty work?
