Norm Thriving at Kansas / Newsday

Interesting quote from Norm:

"The bottom line with recruiting is it's all about the head man, and coach Self does a great job of selling our program," Roberts said.

He sounds like he's doing well. I'm glad for him. He didn't turn out well as our coach, but he was, and still is, a class act. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and I found him to be a sincere, down-to-earth man. I wish him well, although he can't be too happy right now.

NR was and is a class act.

Wish that he hired an assistant who had prior head coaching experience and who knew the NY area on his staff such as a Pete Gillen.

Don't know if that was possible re Pete but would have liked to have had someone on the bench who could have mentored Norm and whom he could have leaned on during the course of the season for advice.

Not saying the eventual outcome would have been different but it might have helped.

Agree entirely, Tony. I, too, had the pleasure of spending some time with Norm when he first took the St. John's job. He couldn't have been nicer or more down-to-earth. Wish him nothing but the best.

Blech. He should have been given a budget to spend $4 million to hire a big time head coach that he could get coffee for.

I have nothing against Norm, but let's be honest, he was way in over his head with the situation he was handed here at St. John's.

This is why depending on an octogenarian to close the deal on a McD's AA from down the block rarely works.

I liked Norm, but to say he is thriving in Kansas is like saying the caboose is is going to the right place. Of course it goes to it's target being pulled by the engine.

Seriously. They didn't miss him at all...won a national championship while he was away.

He was an assistant at Florida right before his latest Kansas gig. Florida seems to be doing ok without him.

It's just a crazy article. To make reference to Niko walking on, when he was handed a spot by Self for being Norm's son. To say Norm is thriving infers a Dunlap like impact on the program, which is simply not true. Most curious of all is Norm being the big man coach - at 5'8 and a Queens College pedigree what does Norm know about teaching big men how to play the game? Maybe it was his work with Sean Evans that impressed Self to appoint Norm to that role.

I had three personal interactions with Norm during his tenure here. Once he did a really gracious thing for my kid that took some effort on his part. Another time I asked him a question about sportsmanship in youth sports at a clinic, and he missed the point. I'd also spoken to him at SJU events. He is a good guy, and a nice person. I'm glad he is back in a career role, in a top program, that suits him best.
