Nickname Debate No Stranger To St. John's

The article and their "75 percent" is misleading. In the University Poll, they never gave the choice of the name Redmen. When compared to Johnnies, Red Storm won because lots of people hate the Johnnies moniker. I'd like them to have had the percentages if you put Red Storm up against Redmen... I have no doubt it would lose in a landslide. They said there was "minimal protest", but that is because nobody was ever asked their opinion and nobody would have listened anyway. It was a dumb, unilateral decision that was hastily out together due to P.C. Fear. Unfortunately, nobody had the brains to just drop the native mascot, which wasn't in the origination of the Redmen name to begin with.

They tried to drop the mascot for a few years. They had the guy in a red tux with a top hat and cane. He was supposed to be the "Red Man", which was more true to he names original roots as you said. I agree, they caved to quickly!!

Please! ... Can we just put this thing to rest? It is what it is ... let's just live with it and move on.
