Actually in a cab leaving Kennedy. Good to be home, but we had a great trip.

Welcome back Bob!
I crumbled under the pressure to keep the site interesting while you were away!
Got a warning notice and Digressed at the slightest provocation.
I am not worthy!!!!:p
Bet you didn't even stop bt Pops in Vico Equense for limoncello!

To recap, while you were away Logen and SlyFox posted some very interesting information.
Did you know that Mullin inherited nothing, nada, silch?
Did you know that Coach K and Calhoun and Jay Wright took "YEARS" to turn their programs around?
Do you (we) realize the real progress that has been made......forget the record!
That's about it. Maher is getting shit-faced in Lima and Rich still has not recovered from Deutschland's loss in the World Cup.
Me, my psychiatrist tells me that I am making a lot of progress and that the 30 years of therapy is finally paying off.......his yatch, his divorce settlement and his vacation to Reno where, coincidentally, he is having dinner with Eric Musselman to see if he has any interest in the St. John's job for $2.5 million. That request actually was brought to his attention by another patient, Mike Medium Tee Guy, so I can't take any credit if he is actually hired next April.

Lol nice one 72...actually laughed out loud. I know it's merely a ball-breaking post, but if demanding standards for our program constantly while 95% of the others settle for failure and that makes me a "patient" then this is one wacky place!

Does the above post make you feel superior to the other 95%?

Think of this? What leverage do you have in demanding standards? Are you influencing anyone to meet those standards, or are they just an annoying rant? Perhaps you should read the Serenity prayer, but if I remember correctly you would reject that on principle. Not busting on you, but really, not much has changed since your last screen name on here.

Everyone wants the program to win. Everyone's patience has been exhausted at one point or another. Some see progress, others see no progress or even continued decline, and others still see progress but not fast enough.

The worst posters on here see themselves as superior because they denigrate the school and coaching staff at every turn. St. John's revenue was damaged great when subsidized student loans ended, with a considerable dip in enrollment (our most important revenue producing asset).

There is little state money to finance things, no incredible endowment allocated to athletic department, only one revenue producing sport. Yet people like you think that the school shouldn't make mistakes in hiring coaches or administrators, and should just be able to magically build a new arena, hire a top notch coach or pick the 'right' bargain among mid major success stories to turn this (and then hope we won't try to turn success into a jackpot (like Jarvis (Charlotte) and Fraschilla (NM) did).

Think of the Yankees. Ken Holtzman comes to mind, or the Fat Toad, or Billy Martin hired and fired a million times. All because Steinbrenner spent a ton of money to correct mistakes and because when he won, he made a ton. We aren't the Yankees and never will be. So become a Yankees fan if you want those types of investments and that kind of success (maybe)

An absolutely wonderful post that hits the nail on the head.

Mike, Beastie is being gentle with you and I will try to follow his example. After teaching staff about mental illness and substance abuse for more than 50 years, including lots of folks in recovery themselves, the simplest way to explain this is that we all have crazy ideas and do dumb self-destructive stuff. The problem is when the crazy ideas and dumb self-destructive stuff have us, sometimes to the point that we don't know our own condition or are unable to stop behavior that harms us or others. Stigma reinforcing speech is common and careless in our culture, maybe a little more so in the current political environment, but it is a disservice to those who are really ill and trying to get their lives back.

Who are the 95%? Who doesn't want the team to win?

Some people think Mullin will succeed, some think he will not. Some want to see another year before making up their mind. None of that is settling for failure, it is a difference of opinion on if this staff can succeed.

Somebody is right and somebody will be wrong. I'm rooting for those that believe Mullin can't get it done to be wrong because the most important thing to me is watching a winning team.

What are you rooting for?

This seems to be the most opportune moment in recent St. John's history.
Our roster--on paper-- is as strong or stronger than it's been in awhile.
Most of us are rooting for what we view to be a necessary staff change, but let's not lose sight of the fact that this team can and likely will cause much damage to opponents next season.
Let's go Johnnies.

Joe3 used to be argumentative in every post. Mike Zaun just consistently expresses a position that some disagree with. I, personally, have no problem with how he expresses his views.

After decades on his couch I'll nutshell it for you: Tequila

Ok so I exaggerated the "95%"...but there's a significant contingent of those who will still hold Mullin to lower standards and I know for sure I'm not the only one who notices this. The St. John's fan community is extremely unique and totally different than that of the Mets, Jets, Knicks, etc. In those fan communities, when the teams don't win, change is demanded and you'd rarely be criticized for that view...in fact it would be the majority view. Here, if there is consistent failure, you are told that you are the problem and "how dare you?". I'd guess the nostalgia tied into Mullin has at least part to do with this.

To imply that I am asking for the world is just not true and silly. All I'm asking for is what other programs already have...there's no excuse for PC, SH, and Butler to have passed us by. Mind you, some if not all of those schools are much smaller. I never asked for a totally new arena...just renovations (which I know are obviously still not cheap). That's not a wild request. I want us to have a competent coach if Mullin does not succeed next year and I hope he does. That's not a wild request. I think it's fair to say that while I have exaggerated some things i.e. 95% of fans have no standards, my requests are also exaggerated by others i.e. we are not the Yankees, Duke, etc.

I'd rather talk St. John's basketball but it seems me personally as a poster always gets brought up. I'm no one special...I'm a diehard St. John's fan and I don't think I've said anything that controversial (at least not in a long time when I was stupider and less mature). I'm probably the most misunderstood person on the entire board and if any of you guys met me, you would say "he's just a regular dude". If I get frustrated it's because I'm such a big fan, not because I want us to fail. Hope everyone remembers that. We can do better and we must do better starting next year.

Kudos on a very concise and thoughtful post Mikey!
I can't agree more with you! Especially where you said "I'm no one special".
I also agree with you when you say "you haven't said anything that controversial recently.
However I disagree with you when you characterized yourself as stupider and less mature when you were Joe3 and wore a medium, rather than a large tee shirt.
Being that you are just a kid to most of us I think that you are still less mature.
And, as a diehard fan, you will learn that you will get stupider with age in discussing redmen basketball because only us idiots would have stuck with our program after 25 years of delusions.
That's what makes us special. Win or lose we will have each other here on redmen.com and no amount of pro bono therapy by Fuchsia will change our masochistic desires to keep attending St. John's basketball games.;)

Many seasons it has been like paying to watch a train wreck

Without sophisticated math, present value of 40 years of season tix somewhere around $55,000 in tix alone. Then there are all those wasted weeknights and weekend days. Hours spent getting out of sju parking lot and lined up at utopia.

All seeking brief moments of daylight after years in darkness. Worst of all submitted my wife and kids to same torture. All except my wife have completely bought in.

Mikey, we're not criticizing you, we are trying to save you from the same fate. It's all just not that important, but we've all got handcuffs and ball and chain to this program.. get out while there's still time for you

:)

No, you and others have hold Mullin to a completely unrealistic and unattainable standard in the time frame you’ve given him. UNATTAINABLE!!! I’ll keep saying it and keep saying it, a timetable NOT achieved by other coaches!! But none of you lemmings can respond to that because there is no logical response. More inanity, boo boo, PC, SH, Butler have passed us by, but that happened well BEFORE Mullin’s watch. What exactly is this lower standard Mullin is held to? That he didn’t come in recruiting 5 star players and didn’t turn SJU from a glorified high school team in Year 1 to a BE contender in Year 3? What exactly was your standard when he was hired because I missed it? So let me say personally for the tenth time so you and your partner in criime, “Mr. I Don’t Settle, I Demand”, IMO Mullin deserves time to prove himself, 5-6 years considering the pile of nothing he inherited. Nothing more, nothing less. TIME!! TIME that was given to all coaches who were successful in rebuilding programs. And oh, just for shits and giggles, how has that militant demand for change worked out for those Knick, Jet and Met fans? Real stable franchises, they.

The really good ones stay good for only so long before listening to other people's craziness drives them to get their own therapist.
