Father H has done a thousand times more than the provincial Father Cahill did. There was almost no growth during the Cahill years. Perhaps visiting the campus would be a step in the right direction. SJ still attracts the children of the working class and that is who many here would exclude for a ratings boost. It is a tough call for the Vincentians. Unfortunately most of the fans on this site would rather pay tuition for their kid to attend Marist or Villanova than attend alma mater on a scholarship. Luckily, the loyalty of a few keep SJ viable in NYC.
As for the US News ratings, after the top 40 schools that have been there forever, with endowmmets in the billions, and not millions, does it really matter if a school is 75 or 105? There are over 1,000 universities and colleges that get rated and St. John's is in the middle of the pack. Nothing to be ashamed of given we are a private Catholic school with no medical school like Georgetown and no engineering school like Villanova.
For good or for worse, we are who we are and we are higher ranked than Louisville academically yet they are the best team in the Big East.

For those that are not happy about the rankings there are, at least, 3 things they can do:

1) Become a St. John's alumni recruiter :

2) Write a check.

Perhaps if we were able to offer more financial aid (not loans) we might be able to corral some students who go to a SUNY school because of a more favorable cost structure.

I realize times are tough but most grads don't pony up each and every year, and the median contribution is way below $50 per year.

Is there any good reason why every alumnus can't kick in $100 a year ? That's about $8 a month.

3) Hire St. John's grads.

It is very tempting for kids to attend a school knowing that their alumni are going to take care of them upon graduation.

I agree on all counts Jersey. Unfortunately most colleges do not use their wealth to offer increased financial aid but to fund non-medical and non-scientific research. Notre Dame does not have a medical school nor are they anywhere near a CalTech in the sciences so why do still charge such outrageous tuition to students with a close to 6 billion $ endowment? Some ivies are moving in that direction for poorer students but they are, and always will be, in a class of their own..........and they do not emphasize sports and do not award athletic scholarships.

While we don't have an engineering school (relatively small at Villanova), we do have one of the largest colleges of pharmacy and allied health professions which raises the academic profile significantly.

My nephew was admitted to ND last year and received a half (academic) scholarship. He basically got he same "deal" from Johns Hopkins and decided to go there..

As an aside, I have lunch yst. with 2 gentlemen who played for Coach Lapchick. Both were Math majors. One received a doctorate in Education. Both earned their Master's at St. John's. One was a member of Skull and Circle (probably the last basketball player to be inducted into that august society) and received The President's Award as the outstanding scholar-athlete as a senior.

Both would have majored in Physics but afternoon labs interferred with practice.

Nice post. You wonder how Rudy Wright (chemistry) and Charles Minlend (pharmacy - which is incredibly demanding in time and effort) managed to play varsity basketball and pursue those degrees.
