New Ideas for The Big East

There are terrific basketball brands out there for the taking. Let's hear some ideas. I have a pretty extreme idea but I'll wait to hear some of yours first.

The Big East is running out of ideas and schools, with ND gone and Uconn, Rutgers andLouisville probably next, the only idea left is to become
a basketball driven conference with the following 8 Catholic schools. .

St. John's
Seton Hall
Georgetown
Providence
Villanova(if they keep football D-1AA)
DePaul
Marquette
Xavier

If Villanova wants to join a new football/bball conference my backup to them would be St. Joe's.
This conference would hopefully get a tv deal and actually gives STJ a better chance of making the NCAA's each year
but if we have an A-10 type tv deal the conference is ruined for life.

Buckets would love to hear your idea, as I think this is our only option left longterm.
The existing Big Least is all over the map and seems too fluid to me to stabilize anytime soon. .

If the rumor of the ACC wanting to add another non-football member is true (I'm not sure it is), I'd tell Monasch to push to get us in, ASAP.

Other then that, I don't think there's anyway we can be in as strong a position/conference then we are in now. We're gonna wind up in an upper mid-major, 2-4 bid league. Time for all of us to accept that, IMO.

Not that anyone asked, but I, for one, am glad ND left. Screw them. I wonder what Jimmy B. is thinking now...

My idea is to go national.. Not really new since we're doing that anyway. 20-24 member basketball league.. Little bit smaller for football obviously.. With what we have added already we are in major media markets... So I like that model..

Next part is what will change things.. Need move away from NCAA and start paying kids.. It's the elephant in the room anyway.. The product will be off the charts.. Obviously need to partner with someone other then ESPN/CBS.. The big football schools are already talking about this.. so it's not really a new idea.. set aside 500k for hoops and 750k for football(from TV money) and pay kids like 50k which is little bit more then guys are making in d league or europe to start out..

I know the old school will not like this idea, but let's be honest we might as well be trend setters then just align with the old boys club that is just looking out for their own best interests.. This will put the Big East in a much stronger position at the same time make it a more desirable destination for talent..

Not sure there any really good solutions. The BE may see more defections now, and then it will be a shell of its old self. I think joining the ACC would be good, but don't think they would have us. Probably want UCONN instead. An all-Catholic league seems pretty passe now, and I don't think it would be anywhere near as good or prestigious as the old BE.

Times have changed and SJU has to figure out what is best for its BB program. The ACC is the obvious choice, but it is not ours. Other than that, the other choices seem to be mid-major.

If I'm Mike Aresco, then I'm thinking that I need a strong response to all of this. Here's what I would do. I would invite UNLV and BYU for all sports. I know that BYU has their own network and such but I would do whatever I had to do to get a deal done with them. I would add Air Force and Army for football only. That would give the Big East the Army vs Navy game every year. I would then add Xavier for basketball. That would make 16 football schools and 22 basketball schools. The addition of BYU would be great for both sports. Air Force has a very good football team and UNLV and Xavier are very good in basketball. With all the current schools that are commited, that's a very formidable conference in both sports with a national footrpint that should be able to get a very good TV deal.

Give you an A for effort but the all sports travel costs for UNLV and BYU make such a move, IMO, a non-starter.

I was thinking that there would probably be East and West divisions and more games would be played in division which would cut down on the travel.
