New head of officiating J.D. Collins

Driving back from North Carolina today, heard on the radio that before Collins was given the job he flew to ESPN headquarters to meet with out going head of officiating, Adams, J. Bilas, and ESPN reps.

What does ESPN have to do with officiating?
 
Collins never did a Championship game (1 FF). Nichols and Adams had worked Championship games. But he was very accomplished nonetheless
