I came across a book which I picked up on Amazon called "Fast Breaks, Finger Rolls & Fisticuffs: Memories of Big East Basketball" written by Mark Hostutler. I'm halfway thru it (it's very short, only 91 pages) & it's been a fun read so far. It's basically a Q&A with former Big East players about their experiences from being recruited, to playing in the Big East, to what's happened with the conference since the defections. The St. John's players that are interviewed are: Billy Goodwin, Felipe Lopez, Mike Moses, David Russell, Shawnelle Scott & Robert Werdann. Some quick sneak peeks that some of you may appreciate are:

Shawnelle Scott on his earliest memory of the Big East, when he was deciding between St. John's & Tennessee. SJU assistant coach Ron Rutledge calling him up & asking him if he wants to go to Tennessee and have cows watch you play or do you want to play in the Garden in front of thousands of people?

Scott Burrell (UConn) on who was the hardest player to defend - Malik Sealy, he gave me my first lesson in the Big East.

Rafael Addison (Syracuse) on which team he hated the most - St. John's, the students there were on you, if I had a bad game they'd say I was on drugs, nothing was off-limits.

Darrell Porter (Pitt) also on which team he hated the most - St. John's, the students there were brutal, they'd call Sean Miller a porn star because he had a thin mustache.

Felipe Lopez on what team he hated - UConn, they had a cockiness about themselves I just didn't like, especially Ray Allen & Richard Hamilton. I wanted to kick their ass.

It's available for like $10 on Amazon for anyone who is interested.

Darrell Porter's comment about Sean Miller is priceless.

I agree.!!!

Wasn't there one year when Jim O'Brien got into a shouting match with a female security guard at Alumni Hall when he was the coach at BC? I think the story was that he didn't appreciate how the SJU students were taunting him & his team and nothing was done about it as she stood nearby the whole time.

Our fans were taunting him about his recently deceased wife. Not our finest hour.

O'Brien had tears. Brutal. But it was a few dickheads not "our fans" and I'm convinced that they were just some Ucon fans that got lost on their way to Anchorage.

It began last Saturday at St. John's Alumni Hall, where BC lost to the Redmen, 65-61. O'Brien took exception to some comments made by fans behind the Boston College bench.

"I wish we had fans like that back in Boston," BC center Bill Curley said. "That's what home-court advantage is all about, making

the other team hate to come back in."

O'Brien didn't see it that way. He nearly went into the stands after the game, then got into a shouting match with a security guard.

"The stuff that was allowed to go on here was ridiculous," O'Brien said. "The people behind our bench were the rudest human beings in the world. That was the worst stuff I've heard since I've been in college basketball. It's nasty stuff. It's vulgar. And here we are telling our kids to ignore it and walk off. ... This is the worst building in the league for us to play."

Our fans were taunting him about his recently deceased wife. Not our finest hour.

While that is true, as the Article mentioned, that wasn't the only "disagreement" O'Brien had that year. Many felt that the stress and emotional turmoil he was under due to the sudden passing of his wife lead to some hot tempered outburst that wasn't common previously.

And I'm sure that the way BC treated him was a much bigger kick than anything opposing fans could ever throw at him.

Was that right about the same time that Mike Maher was sitting in our student section?
