New Basketball League

Lavar Ball tried this a couple years ago, wasn't that successful.

The problem with these alternative leagues for elite high school players is it's impossible for them to offer what colleges do.  They can't offer them prime time national TV exposure, that can't offer them crowds of 20k+ people, they can't offer them top of the line facilities with 24/7 access, and they can't offer them travel on private planes.  That's why even with the G-League offering them 6 figure salaries you only see a small handful of elite players choose the G-League over college, the overwhelming majority is always going to choose the college route just because of the things I mentioned.  It's a big difference playing on ESPN/CBS/Fox and playing on Facebook Live.

Quick clarification.  This league is for 16-18 year old HS kids.  Unsure how it will work around HS schedules since there is no specifc school mentioned as being attached to the program, just tutoring.  Has skills development programs and high level competition.  Pay is based on revenue sharing so if the league doesn't get off the ground with sponsors it won't last long.  Participating would make you ineligible to play in college so its more for kids wanting a track into the G League Ignite program we were discussing a couple weeks back, or to do a Lamelo and play a year overseas.  Wondering how many teams/kids would be required to make it viable and how that matches up with NBA intake.

This new league will pay elite high school players $100,000.00 a year. If you're an elite high school player, why would you want to go to college if the NBA is your goal? Between this new league and the almost 1500 transfers in the portal, college basketball will never be the same again.

Here is more info on the new Overtime Elite League:

The G-League is also offering 100,000k plus and how many elite high school players choose that over college?  I believe it was 3 this year.

Those leagues will never have the exposure, fans, and arenas that college programs can offer.  Just think about how much more money that game winning shot Jalen Suggs probably made him in endorsements.  Casual basketball fans know who he is now, he had pro players of  every sports tweeting about him.  No shot ever made in the G-League or Overtime Elite will ever get that kind of attention.

There were 5 HS players on Ignite this year, their first.  When two go in the lottery it will be interesting to see how many want to sign up for next year.  But it's just one team.   Limited spots.
