Nerlens Noel

Class of 72

If I were Lav, I take a stab at this future NBA player. Nothing to lose but he may be the next Kentucky one-and-done.

Agree completely.
If we can get him we can be a final four team next season.

would love to have him, moe would 100% stick around, and Gathers would commit the next day.

every major NCAA teams message board had this same post on it...unfortunately....

he's going to Kentucky - I have no insider information, but you can book it.

Davis will be the #1 pick, and Noel will slide right into his slot and be the #1 pick next year.

1) we have no shot
2) I prefer to get Obekpa, a more realistic option, who is close to as good of a shotblocker as Noel is and same size.
3). Noel is excellent but waaaay too early to pencil him in as the number 1 pick. His offense and handle and fair but nowhere near the level of Davis. Expectations being heaped upon Noel who is certainly an amazing shotblocker, but not offensively near guys like Anthony Davis who was a Pg a year or two earlier.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Noel, he's a great talent. Just not a realistic option for us I don't believe.

Agree with your post, MCN. I'd love to have Noel, but he isn't a realistic option at this point. If he was a realistic option, then you can bet your arse Lavin and staff would be all over him. The staff probably put out "feelers" on him, but it probably was nonreciprocal.

Waste of time. You can't come in this late in the game and get potentially the #1 recruit in the country. Stick to the plan. Land 2 of the 4 guys Lav has been focusing on for months, and lets build a nationally powerhouse.

I disagree. Remember, he was a 2013 until this week. Now he is fair game. He may have had zero interest before but if Lav can get him to visit and show him he would be a starter on a front line with Harkless and Gathers and play his games on the national stage at MSG and potentially challenge for a national championship, it may sway him.
He is 2012. He is uncommitted. We have to try!

I stated above that I felt the staff probably has long put out "feelers" for Noel, but it probably wasn't mutual. There was a recruiting piece at one point where Lavin was watching Noel (and another kid) a few months ago. I can't remember verbatim, but I recall reading such.

Lavin attempted to reach out to Angelo Chol (currently a frosh with Arizona) back in 2010, but it was to no avail. So, I wouldn't be shocked at all, if Lavin has reached out to Noel, only to receive the same feedback he had with Chol.

Noel is a stud, and someone who I would love to have manning the middle for us next season. But, I don't believe it's in the cards.

Should waste.our time and resources.unless he shows and interest

I know it is a long shot. Getting a player of Obekpa's talent would be preferable but kids change their minds in a heartbeat. We at SJ are spending time and resources in California and Louisiana. This kid is practically in the neighborhood in the northeast. Yes, he has shown no interest but then again Jakarr Sampson decommitted (lost interest) as did Ricardo Gathers (lost interest). Lav is spending a lot of time and resources on those two kids who may not committ again.

One advantage to Noel entering 2012 class is it pushes each top unsigned big down a spot or two.

Hypothetical.

Noel goes to KY and takes Bennett and/or Parker's spot. Amile goes to Duke. Parker and/or Bennett need to think again and one goes to Baylor giving them three bigs in the class. Jakarr and Gathers come to STJ. One can dream. If Shabazz spurns UCLA for Kentucky this whole thing blows up even further. Who would KY prefer Muhammad or Noel?

Speaking of reaching out to Noel.... Per Clint Jackson (byway of Alex Kline), Coach K has reached out to Noel.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski reached out to 2012 Tilton (NH) center Nerlens Noel yesterday, according to @clintjackson1.
