So while watching all these games today it got me thinking. I've never had an NBA team to root for. Grew up in NY and for whatever reason the NBA and the Knicks specifically never really appealed to me. I watched college all the time but that was it. The first college players I liked was Chris Webber so I followed him in the NBA but he seems to bounce around every 5 years

Curious what NBA teams you all root for and what is your story behind it.

The Knicks when I can stomach it and whoever's playing LeBron.

Knicks, mostly because my dad rooted for them. Plus, he used to have a job where vendors kissed his ass with Knick tickets, so I got to go to a decent amount of games.

I root for the Nets some years, but not others, depending on if I like the players. Kind of indifferent on them this season.

Have rooted for the Warriors for I guess 30 years now because of Mullin. Convenient now, since I live in Oakland. All my former New Yorker friends in Oakland have abandoned the Knicks. Half of them might actually deny ever liking them. It's impossible for me to express how much more I like the Warrrors than the Knicks these days, but I still say I'm a Knick fan if asked. I guess I feel guilty about abandoning them. Another 10 years of that cokehead alcoholic owner, though, and I may have to finally cut them loose.

Celtic fan since 1957 when I saw a pro double header at old MSG on 49th street. Celtics Warriors (pre Wilt) and Knicks Pistons. Three teams were playing a game that seemed pretty similar and the Celts with Russell, Cousy, Sharman, Heinsohn, Loscutoff, and Ramsey were playing something different and far more interesting to watch.

You just became my least favorite poster :) although I do recall naming my grade school intramural team the Celtics with me playing the role of John Havlicek because he was one Celtic that i liked. Knick fan although dopey Dolan makes it tough.

I can't stomach the NBA these days but I am a Knicks fan from the days of Ewing/Oakley/Mase/X-Man etc... Nothing better to me than the Knicks vs Bulls/Pacers/Heat in a 7 game series. Van Gundy holding onto Mourning's leg. The only thing missing was Alonzo saying with Van Gundy's hair straight up in the air "and you want to be my latex salesman?"

I am not old enough for the Bird vs Magic time but I am sure those were enjoyable as well.

Knick fan back to Richie Guerin but don't watch pro ball at all anymore; in fact in all sports only watch SJU religiously now. Have only watched one or two football games this year and virtually no baseball until the playoffs and then only the Mets. Will listen to baseball and football on the radio occasionally though.

Duncan retires in a manner fitting of Duncan.

A reporter on the radio today made a case of him being severely underrated because he played in San Antonio and I gotta admit after hearing the case he made I think he is right.

he's gotta be top 5 or so of All Time when you look at his career accomplishments and if he played in NY or LA or Boston he'd be considered a God

An absolutely wonderful player. Shaq called him "Big Fundamental," and that is so appropriate.

He was so skilled and smooth. His classic jumper from the elbow off glass was a joy to watch.

Then add in his grace and humility off the court, and we will have to look long and hard for someone of his equal.

Like you said, no self-aggrandizing farewell tour. Just a simple announcement. Now, he will have a lifetime job in the Spurs organization as a thank you for taking less than he could have in order to keep the franchise healthy and able to sign quality players.

Not just playing in San Antoine, but also there was little to no flash in his game. Just production and professionalism. Doesn't get you as many magazine covers when your vertical is like 20".

He is on my all-time NBA top five and I'm so old he replaced Bob Pettit.
Oscar
MJ
LeBron
Tim Duncan
William Felton Russell

Excellent list. Since I'm younger and going more from what I saw in person I'd have Magic instead of Oscar ( not saying he was definitely better just going from my memory of Magic ) and Kareem instead of Russell but you really can't go wrong with the 5 you mentioned

Instead of the five best for a team it would be interesting to pick five that would make up the best TEAM to go up against another team. I would go with a backcourt of double MJ, Bird (over Bron for shooting), Duncan, and Russ (1a would be Wilt or Kareem).

Duncan is an all-time great.
He had a superb, ultra-efficient game that won titles.
Hooray.
But he was a bore to watch.
Basketball is a game of artistry, of improvisation and Duncan was a robot doing the same thing over and over. Perhaps he did it better than anybody, but man he thrilled me about as much as a lukewarm beer.

It's also a game of out scoring your opponent and winning the game. Hope St. John's bores me to tears and wins 20 plus games.
