Playing good man defense assures that you will play excellent zone defense when the time comes. Can't play matchup zones if you can't defend man-to-man. I think increasing the amount of man-D we play is really just a bridge to playing better zone defense down the stretch. I think Lavin taking a step back and working on the fundamentals in order to take a step forward.

Actually I think it could help. When a team shoots those open 3's we usually have 2-3 guys running at them (aka away from the basket)
 
man 2 man should help rebounding as it simplifies who you have to box out. in a zone you cover an area and if a team overloads it creates a mis-match. instead of seeking out someone to box they rely on their athletic ability which got them thru high school. it makes the player more accountable.
