N.Y. Post: Path For St. John's

"March 2, vs. DePaul: If they lose this, they don’t deserve to make the tournament."

During last night's game the TV guys were saying we could only afford 1 more loss as well. I think if we get a decent draw in the BE tourney and do well there, we'll be in the mix. Making it to the semi's and giving a good showing in that game (or dare I say "a win") would go a long way.

Just my opinion. Should we go 9-9 or worse, even if we go to the BET Finals, we're going to the NIT. 10-8 and finals is not a done deal in terms of a bid. anything less NIT or stay home.

All I can say is that it is very sad and unfortunate that this particular team which really has so much talent is in this position. I think they would play very well in the Big Dance if they get the chance.

I agree but there is a lot of blame to go around from coaches to players.
Unlike Providence that was missing a couple of key players, SJ had a full roster with the depth to redshirt players.
Sadly, Orlando Sanchez never seemed to be quite on the same page as the rest of the team, Jordan had family issues and a couple of other players underperformed.
To make matters worse and adding to the slow development was a coach that changed lineups from game to game and even sunk to a season low to start a walk on and Felix Balamou to send some message with the result being resentment and losses.
As bad as we collectively stunk for most of December and January, this team lost closely contested games to ranked teams like Syracuse and Villanova and went to overtime in two other losses. The DePaul losses was the coup de gras and we are now in a sudden death game in and game out.
In the twilight zone that is SJU basketball and our world of "what ifs" this team could have now been 19-4 and nationally ranked if the above losses were played with last night's intensity.

Bottom line we can and need to win the BET Also if Jakarr leaves after this yr we then need a very good wing recruit 6-7 to 6-8 in 2014 along with a center

I doubt we would have to win the conference tournament, if we were to run the table. Winning it would be great, but I don't believe it's mandatory if we were to finish the conference season at 12-6 and 22-9 overall.

We'd more than likely be in the top 25, and have a very, high RPI rating, as well. This would be before the beginning of the conference tournament, if we were to run the table.

Another interesting article on SJU turnaround & risks going forward;

Interesting piece. The writer is correct about our defensive rebounding. We're allowing way too many points off put backs. It is a lack of fundamentals in boxing out.
We have the size and the quickness.

It's also probably the reason we block so many shots, guys jumping out of their shoes to make a block and not boxing out.

Every block is two points saved (they Re almost all within 2 feet of the basket). Even if half of those result in offensive rebounds and putbacks, we are ahead of the game. I don't understand why people complain so much about our biggest asset.

You know its nearly once a game where we block a ball that goes right to a waiting guy either directly or one pass later to drain a 3. Not being a ball buster but it seriously happens once a game.

8 blocks a game is 16 points saved. That doesn't even take into account the altered shots and shots not put up at all due to intimidation.

Now I am going to bust balls :)

Our exuberance to block is good for at least 4 pts worth of goaltending and how many fouls ;)

The goal tends are shots that 99.99% would have gone in anyway. That's why the call is made. That impact is negligible. As for fouls, I don't think we get too many of those from blocking shots. Certainly, you wouldn't advocate not playing perimeter defense now that the refs are emphasizing calling the hand check, would you?

Plus that doesn't take into account the times when we go for all-in for a block, but don't get it. That's another 4 or 5 times a game.
