Dear Sir,

This Providence loss is terrible. This is not just a basketball game loss but rather A LOST OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A STATEMENT FOR THE UNIVERSITY, THE NEW BIG EAST, and THE FOX NETWORK. SJU was the glue and the essential piece of the puzzle for the original conference. The powers back then, Gavitt & Kaiser, knew this and set out to create the best conference in college athletics with ST. JOHNS as the anchor.

We had an opportunity to make a statement with a win but....we came up short! Our failure to seize the moment by defeating the Friars and perhaps pick-off the Hall and make the finals would have been electric.

The Garden would have rocked Saturday night, the Big East would have laid the foundation for a great future and the Fox Network would have jumped for joy./

We have come up short again!

Three NCAA Tournament appearances in 15 years is marginal at best and not how a major university in NYC, who plays in MSG and how a leader for the new conference should perform.

This is not on the players, it is on you and the coaching staff to rise up and lead us out of the wilderness.

Just heard the ACC will be at The Barclay Center in 2017, please step up or kiss MSG and FOX goodbye.

Unless you cut a 100k check I doubt our email gets read. But nice effort.

What is the purpose of this e-mail?
Lavin isn't going anywhere...he's going to get an extension and honestly why not? We are a bunch of brats that think SJU should be in the
same breath as UK, UNC, and Kansas. That is not a reality. Lavin is getting a caliber of recruit we haven't touched in over a decade. Obviously he is not killing it with x's and o's, but who out there can we reasonably get (AND retain) that does both? There are very few of those guys. It is a lot easier to supplement the staff with an x's and o's guy than a power recruiter/closer. I think Whitesell did a good job. I saw more growth out of the players and team in six weeks than two years combined.

I really think this team will be nasty with a soph Jordan. We live and die by that kid and he has a whole summer to beef up. Freshmen are usually useless...and the jump from frosh to soph is often the biggest a player makes in his/her career.

Dear Sir,

My aunt had an opportunity to be my uncle but she was born with ovaries instead of testes.

Agree except remarks about freshmen. Your point may have been true some years ago but today many freshman (see Wiggins, Embeid, Parker, Gordon, Cal winning a NC with mostly freshman). Besides think Sheed had a very good year (especially for a freshman :) ).

I've been saying for a few years that Cal doesn't win with freshman and said they'd be mediocre the last two years (by their standards at least). Cal never won with just freshmen. At Memphis, he had all seniors and juniors with Derrick Rose. At UK, he had upperclassmen like Liggins, Harrellson,Vargas, and Darius Miller along with awesome sophs like Doron Lamb and Terrence Jones. People only see the Anthony Davis and John Wall types and forget that Cal loves experienced walkons and upperclassmen. Let's also be honest about the type of freshmen they get and what we have. Anthony Davis and Derrick Rose are two of the best freshmen to ever play the game...both #1 draft picks. Jordan wasn't even top twenty in his class.

People on this board generally dismiss the value of walkons, but I assure you the best coaches out there do not...especially in this age of one or two-and-dones They provide continuity for the program, set expectations during practice and conditioning, and pass on a culture of winning.

Do you actually mean walkons or 4 year program players?

Bama...understand your point...but, recruiting like the NBA draft is primarily about the top 5-8 players...a lot of those guys you mentioned would have been drafted out of HS...Sheed is a 5 star and a great recruit but it is rare, IMO, that a freshmen (outside of the top 5 or so) makes a tangible impact on win-loss record...He will be great next year...

SHU fans understandably have great expectations for next year but will find the same thing out next year...Whitehead is very good but going to come in and dominate (again, IMO)

Let's hope it was a non sensual email or we have much bigger problems.

LOL

By the way, it (the e-mail) probably will get tossed, considering the surname was spelled incorrectly.

Dear Mr. Monasch,
Your creamy, supple orange skin makes me tingly all over. Please fire our coach.
Tenderly yours,

While this email will fall on deaf ears (what makes you think an administration that hired Jarvis, Roberts and Lavin cares or has a clue), I believe in what you did. I thought about calling but as an Islanders and SJU fan, I understand it will go nowhere. However, the lost Thursday was the worse loss of the Lavin era. Win that game, and you are in the NCAA and likely playing for the BE final, instead of in the NIT. I walked by Penn Station today to get to work, and Creighton fans were all over, saw some players walking around. It made me sick. Even in a watered down BE we can't make the semis.

People here can defend Lavin all they want, but in the end of the day he just makes Norm like excuses. He is in his 4th year and the only NCAA he made was with Norm's guys, then blamed losing to an 11 seed on one injury. He is an awful coach, and I am not sure he is a great recruiter. The kids he brings in all fit one model and are not what makes a winning team. He has not recruited an elite shooter, he has not recruited many intelligent players. All Lavin cares about is what restaurant he is going to.

Fan support is down, since the first year he came in. He had a chance to take this program and run with it after the Hardy year brought back the momentum. Even if we are decent next year, which I suspect this group + Lavin will find a way to screw up with bad losses, we have ZERO players for the following year. Jordan is gone after next year, so is Sampson. Obekpa might not even be back next year. We have zero recruits for '15, and even if he picks up some, it wont be high enough caliber to win.

The right thing to do now is fire Lavin, hire an actual coach. Let that actual coach win with these kids next year, and let him mold the future. Paying Lavin what he makes is a waste of money. I cannot blame fans for the apathy they have shown.

Instead of being at MSG tonight with a bid on the line, we are on this website. Thanks Steve.

And FWIW, I was born in 1988 and my SJU memories that formed me into this diehard fan were the late 90 teams. I hate to break it to the Lavin apologists but up until the early 2000s SJU was a top 5 all time winning program and always an NCAA team or at least a very competitive team. So yes, we should expect better.

FWIW, we may have been 5th all time in wins, but no one in their right mind would ever claim we were one of the 5 best programs of all time.

FWIW, the 2010-2011 team was paper thin in depth. We needed everything to break right to make a deep run. When Brownlee broke his finger, he kept playing but we essentially lost our number 2 scorer, and the team lost its mojo at that point. Losing DJ, who was positioned by Lavin as a glue type of player who filled a boxscore and not the best player as Robert's positioned him, was a devastating blow as our third best player. Beyond DJ, we had a bunch of role players. Blame Lavin for that? Are you serious?

I see plenty of good teams with injuries still beat teams they are 5 seeds ahead of. I agree that losing DJ was huge but we were not ready to play and got blown out by a mediocre Gonzaga team. And even still, that was with Norm's kids. Lavin has had 3 years with his guys and done nothing.

Fire Lavin. Than after that, fire yourself you bum

Very funny post, even if you were being serious

I will give Lavin credit for giving Hardy the opportunity to make him look good, much as David Cain did for Brain Mahoney,.

Follow up with phone call. When he gets on, scream "Baba Bouey," and hang up. In two years, we'll be starting the two Delarosa brothers, Hooper and two walk-ons. The new Wonder Five.
