This is a common practice in Europe in both basketball and soccer. He was not "traded" but loaned to another club who will pick up part of the contract. It allows players who are not starters to gain more experience and playing time and they then have options to return to their home club. The bad players just get cut.

Of course. I must say I was surprised when he started out at Serie A to begin with but he was getting good minutes.
