Mullin Interview With Steve Serby

That was a great interview. I'm lucky because I get to see his studio work after every Warrior game. He's great in the role because he really knows the game.

He's also being overly modest. I would definitely put Curry as best shooter all time, but I think Mullin could have put himself top five or six instead of top 10. But in a game of HORSE I'm not putting Mullin worse than top 3.

Great interview w/ CM. I'm curious about one thing: he followed Lavin, who did OK @ SJU and was always regarded as a strong recruiter; how did it come to pass that the cupboard was so bare when Chris took over? Was there an exodus of transfers? Thanks- I can't recall.

Aside from lack of new recruits, cupboard was bare because Chris Obeka left two months in under Mullin, and Rysheed Jordan wasn't going to be eligible if he decided to stay.

All you have to do is look at the roster Mullin's first year. It was created in desperation because most of Lav's last year's team (very short rotation) was graduating, and as RedstormNC points out Jordan had stopped going to class and Opekba wasn't willing to commit to Mullin's expectation of a student athlete. Also, understandably Lav pretty much stopped recruiting once the writing was on the wall that he wasn't coming back.

I agree the Mullin interview was great. Chris always had a wry sense of humor (loved the NIL joke) and I will always cherish the memories of his playing days; coaching clearly wasn't his thing.

technically Mullin was correct but to be fair if Lavin came back he was absolutely getting Lovett and Mussini but that now has passed. I wish I was an older st johns fan who was fan in 84ish. I didnt become a fan till 87-88 although I loved Mullin as one of my favorite all time players in NBA top 3. But unfortunate for me I remember the coach who didnt show up on several recruiting visits or wasn't on campus for them and who sat on the scorers table and who was on the outside of a huddle looking in with St Jean 24 years old running the huddle "

You're never going to let the sitting on the scorers table thing go. :) You need Spock to whip the Vulcan mind meld on you and say "Forget, forget, forget". Go grab a lobster roll a cold IPA, kick your feet up and enjoy..:);)

lol it's true. That disgusting site is etched in my mind forever. But hey it's not like Jarvis took me time to get over for years ( luckily Norm I forgot about after Lavins first year ) Mullin I was just happy he was gone we peaked and were about to go down big time and lets be honest when Matt left we had 0 recruiters. The only reason I was really mad is because he completely lied to us in his original presser about how hard he was going to recruit and work and he was a guy who always worked harder than everyone else and in my mind he was an all time basketball great who always saw things on the court before everyone else so it was just a huge letdown for me plus the recruiting stories are very real even though people might not like talking about them. And I'll be the only one to say it but I dont care basically we paid him for a final 4 appearance, Feel like Jack Nicholson " you want the truth you cant handle the truth. lololol " Not you Sec9 I know no-one will agree with me but I dont care

MJM, I get it. As I am with every new coach, I was a Mullin supporter until it could no longer be justified. It didn't work and a lot of it was due to his failure to be there on the recruiting end which was unexpected given his history and what he promised on the way in. I do think his family situation had a lot to do with it and while that is not an excuse I do understand it. Anyway, I'll always admire Mullin the player and human being, if not Mullin the coach.
I never cared about the dress code thing tbh.

Thx and totally understand the family thing ( but that had no bearing on St Jean running huddles first season ). I'm just old school. My dad burned into my head a really young age if you cash a check you earn it ( and he didnt take sick day for 40 years which was insane but you kinda get my mindset on this )

Could not agree with you more Mike, and obviously your dads work ethic was well understood and is being followed.
I remember working in landscaping in Queens in 1984 and it was 100 degrees outside. As I look up from the lawn I am mowing near the school I see Mullin jogging outside. His work effort as a player was second to none. Those of us who had watched him play assumed it would be the same as a head coach. How hard can it be to show up to the office 300 days a year , at a job you love, when you are getting paid close to $7,000 a day ?

It's clear, though, that it wasn't a job he loved.
Quite the opposite, I think.
