@NYPost_Brazille: St. John's signees Ron M'Vouika, Malik Ellison, Tariq Owens and Darien Williams all at Yankee Stadium to support coach Chris Mullin. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: Chris Mullin grounds out to second. He would fit perfectly with the #Mets. #sjubb

What this means to me is that this group of four key players is on campus , attending summer school , working out with the strength and conditioning coach and the staff. First game is in six months. A great deal of improvement can occur in that time period.
New staff continues to do everything correct IMHO.

Was there a nypd helicopter flyover for the game ? If there was it was my brother flying the lead helicopter. He told me the other day they might be doing one

It's so good to see Chris become a major sports figure in NYC once again, and to see how much fans of all sports welcome him*, and to see how he's matured into a well-spoken man who can handle the media so comfortably and so ably.

*I was having a drink with a friend at the bar of an UES restaurant Saturday night, and we happened to strike up a conversation with a well-dressed guy, probably in his 50s. Turns out he was a Yale alum and the president of a Wall Street firm, and we initially talked politics ... but when he heard I went to St. John's, he immediately -- and enthusiastically, and without any prompting -- said how great it was that Chris Mullin was our new coach and how great it was, not only for St. John's but for all of New York City. Went on and on. Said growing up in NYC, he was a huge fan of the Mullin & Berry team, and how much he was excited about the future of SJU hoops.

I. What this tells me is the player who needs to be on campus the most,Sheed, isn't .

Agree Redken. NYC(especially Manhattan) has tons of college basketball fans just looking for a team to root for. A client of mine, a UCLA/Stanford grad and huge college hoops fan, was telling me not to long ago that if St. John's had a successful team he would jump right on the bandwagon. And that he had tons of friends and work colleagues who he knows would do the same. We are sleeping giant gradually being awakened.

Chris, it seems to me, in the short time he has been the HC, has gotten involved visibly in more activities than several of his predecessors combined. He is getting involved and he has gotten not only the fan base, but more New Yorkers enthused about SJU basketball. Its good for the program and its good for the university. The event planned for Saturday, where he has gotten about 15 futures to be on campus is something that I don't ever recall his predecessors doing. He just seems to be doing the right things to make the program a premier program. He has become very visible and so has the program. Keep up the good work Chris.

Chris has replaced LC as the true ambassador of St. John's Basketball, Lou was top billing at all SJU events since he retired all the coaches since struggled to really make the program their own. Below is a ranking of how I felt the coaches post LC handled the media, does not correlate necessarily with wins and losses:

1.) Steve Lavin - was a solid interview brought enthusiasm but not a NY guy, may have hurt in certain circles.

2.) Fran Fraschilla - Great with media very solid, why he's excellent analyst today.

3.) Brian Mahoney - nice guy meant well but the losing hurt him as an interview towards the end of his career.

4.) Mike Jarvis - Mike was very good interview when he came on board, but he quickly imploded his ncaa rape comment was overboard, he went off the rails losing media support.

5.) Norm Roberts - seemed scared, overmatched I remember year 4 when Mike and Dog had him on and destroyed him on the air, its the reason Monasch took the big interview with Mike in year 5.
Year 6 a loss to seton hall at home norm looked so uncomfortable in the post game kept grabbing his collar.

Was there ever any doubt? :)

It occurred to me after watching Mullin throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium, and then trotting to greet the Yankee catcher, he gave a warm tap to the shoulder. At first I was thinking here is our chris mullin at YANKEE STADIUM throwing out a pitch. Then in the aftermath I thought this is our HOFer CHRIS MULLIN, throwing out the first pitch at yankee stadium, much bigger and more accomplished than most of the guys on the Yankee roster, and revered in NYC far more than any of them. We have a gem. #sjupride

Spot on, Monte. Know many of the same type. Have buddies who went to smaller D3 schools and don't have an allegience who go to games from time to time, but would really develop into fans if we became good consistently. Also know guys who went to hoops schools further away and are rarely able to get to games, and would come to more of ours, especially the bigger ones, just to get their fix. And if we really get there, the big games draw corporate interest. Had a friend, not even a big hoops fan, who took clients to the Pitt game in 10-11 because they told him they were general college hoops fans and wanted to see a big game that had buzz.

These types may not be true fans or fans at all. But you need the casual and non-fan to become interested in order to enhance excitement and attendance. Reality is SJU doesn't have enough all-weather fans to get a decent crowd to the Garden consistently. But this city is packed with sports fans who want to go see a good and exciting product, especially from Feb-March when college hoops is the only show reaching an apex.

But this caliber of fan has no interest in an inconsistent, mediocre, even above-average product. Have to win at a high level consistently and build a buzz.

We have the opportunity to capture the city with the current state of pro & college hoops in the area. Coach's very public re-entrance into Metro-NY area consciousness is a great start. I look forward to more on SJU in the media.

I've been approached by several friends, some of who formerly had season ticket holders that told me they want to buy again - all based on the enthusiasm that Mullin is our coach.

When I had my season tix in the past, I had 4 tix in total with a group of 4 friends. I went to all games and they alternated since there was 3 tix between the 4 of them. None went to SJU yet all were big college hoops fans who adopted SJU as their local team. There's no doubt that a successful SJU team will not only draw the casual fan, but will draw the support of the casual fan. Mullin has already captured the attention and interest of the casual fan in short order, now we've got to put a winning product on the court.
