St. John’s positioned to land monster class;

Steve Lavin and Co. have earmarked 2015 as a big year, with several open scholarships to be filled. The Johnnies are in the mix with several elite prospects, most notably New Jersey point guard Isaiah Briscoe, a consensus top-20 recruit who would replace Rysheed Jordan – expected to enter the draft after his sophomore year – and Long Island big man Cheick Diallo.

Odds of landing both five-star recruits are long. Diallo also has Kansas, Iowa State and Kentucky on his list. But Briscoe is said to be intrigued by St. John’s and the possibility of playing his home games at MSG, and has St. John’s among his final seven, a list that also includes Louisville and Arizona.

Lavin has also made inroads with Louisiana shooting guard Brandon Sampson, Georgia combo guard Malik Beasley, California point guard Tyler Dorsey and Donovan Mitchell, a native of Elmsford, NY, who attends prep powerhouse Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. The St. John’s coach is known as a closer – and we’re getting into the late innings.

I hate these articles that proclaim Jordan to be headed into the draft after this season as a done deal. He's got a long way to go, especially if he wants to be in the first round. He needs to just do his thing and not be pressured by making it right now.

Check out his Twitter. The kid has no intentions of being in college by next June. He has said multiple times this summer that he's gone by then.

Well, I hope that's just some cockiness on his behalf. Hey, if he improves enough this season to get drafted then all the power to him. I just hope he's got advisors who will steer him properly.

Did Sampson improve enough to to get drafted? He was working to his own agenda which (specutively) did not include doing enough schoolwork to remain eligible. I agree with Marillac that Jordan does not appear anywhere approaching a lock to be a first rounder but the reality seems to be that he has his own time frame for college participation.

Exactly right. I don't think anyone is telling Rysheed to set this time frame.
I just think he has made up his own mind that he's going pro after this year, one way or another.

Yep. Recruits realize that also.

The one difference here is that Sampson always had academic issues. He couldn't even get accepted to school the first time around. Have never heard of those issues with Jordan. If he's not showing up on any draft boards by next March, then I think he stays.

I thought Lavin didn't recruit? Seems we are in decent position for some nice players, although I never believe the hype until they hit the college level. Plenty of great high school players turned into not so great college players. The rankings to me don't mean anything until they hit the court.

it's all meaningless until they sign and then suit up. Would be great to land Briscoe and another couple of good players but not counting on it.

We are already out on Mitchell.

The only recruit I truly think we have is Sampson because in every interview he said he loves to be "the guy" like Harrison is now. And with Harrison and Greene, and most likely Jordan, on the way out, he should sign up. But as for Diallo and Briscoe, I am not confident whatsoever because of who we are up against.

I guess the more Jordan talks about bolting after this season, the better it is for our chances of landing Briscoe, which have gone up dramatically today.

If Briscoe was content to play SG and Jordan wasn't so antsy, just imagine a backcourt of Jordan and Briscoe....

It would be great if Briscoe would commit sooner than later so we can start to build a class around him. We have so many scholarships to fill.

I liked what I saw from Gibbs at the Peach Jam.

If those two signed and the team puts up the Ws I expect, the class could just be ridiculous. I am very happy to read that Arizona got Trier, as I really think that will ends Briscoe's serious interest in Arizona. Three five-star players at the 1,2, and 3 for a team that will already be loaded at those positions with returning top 50 caliber talent. Yikes.

Rothstein stating the obvious;

"2. St. John's needs strong 2015 recruiting class

The Red Storm may not have to sign nine players like they did when Lavin first took over the reigns of the program in 2010, but it's pretty clear that St. John's 2015 recruiting class will shape its future. The Red Storm will lose D'Angelo Harrison, Jamal Branch, Phil Greene and Dom Pointer after this season to graduation, and likely both Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa to the NBA.

What does that mean for Lavin? In addition to the pressures of attempting to take this program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since his first season, he's also going to have to sign a heck of a class to maintain the talent level that's he's had since arriving in Jamaica. St. John's will return role players like Christian Jones, Felix Balamou, Keith Thomas and Adonis DeLaRosa in '15-16, but it's clear that this program needs to add a slew of impactful newcomers in its upcoming recruiting class.

St. John's remains on the short list for Top 100 prospects such as Isaiah Briscoe (Roselle Catholic, 6-3 PG), Cheick Diallo (Our Savior New American, 6-9 PF), Brandon Sampson (Madison Prep Academy, 6-4 SG), and Malik Beasley (Saint Francis High School, 6-4 SG). The key to the entire class may be Briscoe, a talented, scoring lead guard who recently said he's not going to sign until next spring. As of now, the Red Storm don't have a starting-caliber perimeter player on the roster for the '15-16 campaign as long as Jordan departs after next season as expected."

Other than Briscoe, which other top-150 PGs do we have a very good shot at?
