monetary return on a student athlete

This article has several facets worth pondering. The kid's father is a shady guy, really a low level convicted felon who claims to derive income from real estate investments that he doesn't legally own. He claims to have selected his wife mainly for breeding purposes, an allegation that would make Jimmy the Greek spin in his grave. All the dirty "financial supporters" who participate in college basketball were used by this guy, pointing out again, the corrupt nature of the system. Charges of accepting payments for college trips? How the heck does the NCAA think that top players are attending prestigious camps all over the ocuntry as HS students? UCLA hiring a highly paid assistnat merely to attract a top player?

The system is corrupt. It can't easily be fixed because too much is at stake, from Nike-type influence peddling, to bending recruiting rules, to inventing ways to get at top athletes, many of whom live below the poverty line. Why can't it be fixed? Because Holmes is correct - the colleges make tens of millions and the kids get crumbs.

Correct Beast. Even the C7 Big East has attached themselves to increasing their take in the process.
All this money, which pales to the football side of things, but nonetheless is incredibly noteworthy is
based on student athletes creating an attraction that people are willing to pay for.
This guy Holmes is a fascinating character.

Now you know why the Fab 5, especially Chris Webber were so bitter. Merchandising went up 10s of millions of dollars solely because of them and their stylistic impact on the game.

Everyone got rich except for the 5 kids who were responsible for it! It's one of the reasons why they came out with plain blue t-shirts for warmups.

The system is flawed and the NCAA is a hypocritical joke. But we all know that already.

And three of the five ended up super rich anyway.

Exactly. They got a 2 year education at one of the better academic institutions in country. All expenses paid as well as a stipend, I assume. Guessing the package was worth 100K if not more. They were national celebrities.. They honed their games and their brands while at Mich. Rose, Howard and Webber reaped huge monetary rewards soon enough. Not saying that the system isn't broke. It is. Just not sold on the fact that paying kids is the answer.

I'm not sold on paying student athletes neither...but you can totally understand a 20 year old who doesn't have a dollar in his pocket getting upset as rich, fat men are getting tens of millions of dollars off of his talent and hard work.

I think the NCAA should have some sort of revenue sharing deal setup that puts a % of money made from merchandising in a 401 type of account for the players' future.

Sorry, but the tuition and other perks that these kids get is a mere drop in the bucket compared to what $$$ is being earned by these schools.

This is a big business and the biggest assets to this big business are not even earning minimum wage. Know how much CBS paid the NCAA for the rights to broadcast March Madness?

How do you write out $11 billion?

$11,000,000,000!!!

Now what were you saying about $100,000 in tuition and expenses as a fair perk?

Sounds like a reasonable concept, but boy would we be in trouble with our lack of merchandising.

True, I'm guessing $750 can't be much of a future for our players!
