Mo / Tuesday N.Y. Post

we'd be ranked right now if harkless stayed for his sophomore season...no doubt.

now he's dealing with the same inconsistancies that plagued him last year. oh, well!

Sounds like your not happy with his decision to leave.

to say the least. i'll be even less happy when obekpa and sampson do likewise before the next draft. i'm also nervous about harrison and garrett...

Since you use the word "when" I guess you are certain they will both go pro. Is this inside info or your gut feeling?

Everyone is leaving this year.

I think everyone was sad to see Mo go. But, I can never fault someone when they are going to get 1st round money. In fact, I think it is irresponsible for most players not to leave as soon as they know they are going to get drafted in the first round. So absolutely Mo did the right thing.

That being said, I don't see Harrison, Obekpa, or even Sampson on too many draft boards yet and if I couldn't guarantee that 3 year - 1st round money I would strongly consider sticking around at least another year. I have to believe that's what Lavin would tell them.

not a gut feeling...a newsman's ear. lavin said about obekpa on SNY after the seton hall game, "we're glad to have him as long as he's here". why throw that out if there's nothing in the works?

many thought sampson would be one and done. his winning all those big east player/rookie of the week awards is great for him...but doesn't bode well for us.

st john's has always been a star-crossed program.

Would be interesting to see the lowest PPG from a 1st round NBA draft pick.

Lavin says a lot of outlandish things about his players. The one about CO ranks up there in the top 3.
He is barely 6'8........ Cannot defend bigger guys that are 6'8 (see Seton Hall), is a weak rebounder, cannot hit the ocean with his foul shooting and he is NBA material after his freshman season?? LMAO! What position do you see him playing in the NBA?
Until Jakarr eats a few more ham sandwiches and improves his shooting form, he will be back.
Harrison is not an NBA player.
Garrett's future is in baseball and his staying or leaving is entirely up to his baseball team's needs.

If Obepka, Sampaon and Harrison all leave after this year as Newsman claims will happen, it will be great for Lavin as far as recruiting in the future. He'll have been here three years and already sent four players to the pros (Kennedy, Harless, Sampson, Obepka and Harrison). The problem is that it sets this program back another two years in our quest to get this program to where we all want it to be which is a consistent top 15 team year after year. Even if we get Lawrence and Jordan, next year will again be tough like this year. Losing early season games while Lawrence, Hooper and Jordan get comfortable etc. Also, if Lavin knows that all three of these guys are leaving why haven't we heard more names come up with regard to potential recruits? Lavin and staff will need to fill those three spots. I hope all three stay at least one more year.

No way is Obekpa ready for the NBA. Certainly he blocks shots but his offense and rebounding are lacking. He'll be around for us next year.

Lavin's remarks about Obekpa does not mean he thinks he will leave this year.

People keep missing the fact that Harrison, could go overseas and make money also. Others have left early and done the same.

Sampson, might get a look base on potential (and many who get drafted are drafted based on that, not what they can do for a team right now).

Personally, I hope they are all back, but think we could lose one (Harrison) or two (Sampson) depending on what they show the rest of the year.

Mo leaving definitely hurts, Would his staying have helped him get drafted higher. In his case probably (I don't think this is a deep or very strong draft) but that is not a guarantee. But you have to weigh in the potential for injury and the fact that the sooner you come out, the earlier you can make the real big money as your salary in the 1st three years in the NBA are are based on slot scale and depends on where you were drafted. After that, the salary potential opens up.

If Sampson keeps this pace- I can see a team taking a chance on him on potential alone. Does harrison need money? dont know much about his $ situation, but I don't believe he could make it in the NBA, but could have a solid career overseas. If he improves his footwork and transitions into a PG who has a standout jr year- then possibly.

Chris is completely raw, if he was close to 7 ft I could see a team taking a flyer on him, but this kid is a 3yr player- which is good for us.

With all this being said, then again it begs the question, why do we not hear or see any other recruits being mentioned at this time? Lavin has to have some idea of what the realities are pertaining to all three players mentioned. If they do leave we're going to need more than just Lawrence and Jordan. Neither of them are a lock either. That means a short roster again next year even with Hooper and Gift.

Not to take this thread too far away from Moe.
But he has said that those two are the only players he's recruiting for '13.

This is great, building on and keeping that relationship, great PR stunt to also have him take media questions on campus.

and the South Jamaica Queens native pays a visit... great kid

When it comes to players leaving, I usually rely on NbaDraft.net for their mock draft which can paint a pretty good picture of where players are on the NBA radar. At this point last year, I believe Harkless may have already worked his way into the first round of mock drafts. Yet, right now, no sign of Obepka, Harrison or Sampson in their current mock draft.
