Missed Layups

Great start to the season at 10-2...I'm thrilled we avoided any and all bad losses thus far! One of the more concerning things however is our regular struggle regarding layups. The problem is not penetrating...we get to the hoop a decent amount. We just cannot convert once we are at the rim. It's to the point where if I were Mullin I would go back to the basics...use the window on the glass. That's what the square is there for. It's amazing how many bunnies we are missing and it's not in only one isolated game. Our guys need to work on having a softer touch around the rim. Yakwe, Simon, and Ahmed all have very rough touch. Thankfully they are playing good defense to make up for it thus far! Anyone else notice this?

I'd like to see our big guys go up stronger and finish with dunks more as opposed to layups. Owens and Bashir in particular.

Totally agree with this.

Ahmed misses a lot of bunnies- if he makes them he is averaging close to 20 a game.
Also, the alley oops our percentage is terrible- just lay it in. Clean that up and we are real dangerous.

I noticed that several players miss layups. They seem to throw the ball in the direction of the hoop under pressure and hope for the best instead of passing to a teammate who may have a higher percentage shot.

What many coaches communicate to players is that finishing takes intense concentration and focus. Having played (at lower levels of course) there is a certain zone you should get into taking the ball to the hoop, where a bump, hack, sometimes almost smash to the face is hardly felt as you barely feel those things focusing on finishing. The mindset shifts from simply getting off an unimpeded shot, to making the basket. Ponds and Lovett are supremely good at this when in a zone, but coaches still reinforce this always.

Lately Ponds has attempted dunks off his drives to the basket, most of the time not finishing. Also he gets knocked on his ass driving for a layup without any foul calls.
