After running in the 2013 Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness Mike Repole is back on this year's Triple Crown path. He is running three horses in this Saturday's Belmont. The filly Unlimited Budget third in the Kentucky Oaks, Overanalyze eleventh in the Derby and the long shot Midnight Taboo are all trying to negotiate Belmont's testing mile and one half distance for the Repole Stable. One of the three should be able to go to the lead setting up the other two to close. His horses are always worth a few bucks. And why not?

No mention of St. John's , which is not a surprise.

Did mention fellow alumnus Anthony Bonomo

How does he not mention the new UA contract with SJ both as a local sports guy and especially as a damn alumni?! I swear I can't stand him anymore. He is such a jerk and he goes out of his way not to mention his alma mater. When SJ basketball is the talk of town again I hope no one tunes in to his show.

1. It hasn't been officially announced.
2. What makes you think he has any clue about the new UA deal?

Oh really? I thought it just was a few weeks back. I guess redmen.com is way ahead of schedule. Anyway to answer your 2nd question, he's a sports commentator on the most popular sports radio show in the biggest sports market in the country. He surely has people digging for this information if he isn't himself. I'll bet he doesn't even mention it when it's official. He sees SJ as a DIII sports school. But watch, once this team is top 15 again he will pretend he was the biggest fan all along.

Joe-

I'm not that much older than you. I've grown up listening to Mike. He talks NFL and MLB till he's blue in the face. NBA now more since the Knicks are good. Never talks hockey unless Rangers are in the playoffs. Sprinkles in Golf and Horse Racing. He talks NCAA basketball only during the tournament when he pretends he's been watching all year. In addition callers have called Mike to talk about STJ and talk recruiting and such and he has always taken a hands off approach. He was close with Fran supposedly and since Fran was fired he grew more and more distant from STJ and STJ talk. He won't mention the Under Armour deal. Thats a guarantee. And his producers also couldnt care less. We are all diehard fans here but look at the sheer numbers. We are a pimple on the ass of the NY sports scene and Mike has all those other things to talk about.

As for the UA deal it will happen, its just not official yet. Nothing on Redmen has said otherwise. University fiscal year ended May. Similar holdups were what caused STJ to wait on announcing Dunlap as asst coach though we all knew it.

And his movie reviews especially during academy awards time

I used to listen to him all 4 yrs of high school during my lunch break. I'd eat lunch in my car listening to him. I continued throughout college and even today if I'm stuck in traffic going to the city or something. I realize NCAA hoops isn't an emphasis of his show, but many people don't even realize he went to SJ let alone hear him talking about SJ at all. I remember at Marist Brandon Tierney (an alumni) came to talk. I attended and got to speak with him for about 5 minutes. I remember asking him why he never brings up Marist basketball (they had a few damn good years in 06, 07) including the NCAA's assists leader in Jared Jordan or the fact that he attended Marist. He laughed and said "When Marist sports are worth mentioning man, trust me I'll mention it. SNY doesn't pay me (he was with SNY at the time) to cover Marist hoops unless Marist hoops is in the top 25 or something real significant". So I guess that's Mike's policy too. By the way Tierney is a great guy...he doesn't seem like a famous TV guy he feels more like some guy you'd have a beer with. Very open, honest, and down to earth. He is a great alumni that didn't forget where he came from. Even Bill O'Reilly goes back to Marist and donates a lot. I wish Francesa would be more involved with the power he's attained.

Tierney is a great guy and a HUGE fan of STJ actually. Mike has been in the industry a lot longer than Tierney so Mike dictates what he does. I honestly dont even think he would talk much about STJ if they were a Top 10 team. In terms of the FAN Tony Paige is an STJ fan but only covers overnights. Jastremski is a CUSE guy but talks hoops. Evan Roberts has talked STJ before a decent amount. And Boomer and Carton have a good relationship with STJ.

Unfortunately for Mike the coveted Belmont Stakes still eludes him. After a narrow miss in 2011 with Stay Thirsty, who finished a close second to Ruler On Ice, Mr. Repole did not fare as well this year with his three horses.

His filly Unlimited Budget finished sixth, eight and one half lengths behind winner Palace Malice. His colt Overanalyze finished seventh, a nose behind Unlimited Budget and his other colt the long shot Midnight Taboo finished a distant twelfth beaten by more than forty-nine lengths.

Fortunately he has a deep stable, a strong will to win and the drive to keep going so I am sure he will return in future years to chase after his Belmont dream.
