Question - Any chance of a BB game between Pitt and SJU before the Champagnie brothers graduate?

Cragg Answer - We would all love for that to work out ... seems to me that MSG would be a perfect location for a big game! Stay tuned.

MC comment - All Fall Sports student-athletes will receive an extra year of eligibility. That will definitely impact team roster sizes while scholarship limits will only have a one-year exemption in 2021. Like last Spring, our coaches will manage with our administration - worked out great.

Question- Good afternoon, Mike! Are you able to provide any update on the 2020 NIT SeasonTip-Off given that Arizona will not be in attendance following the Pac-12's decision to cancel all athletics through 1/1/20?

Response- Spoke with ESPN organizers last week - tough to predict given the current travel restrictions in NY as well. Arizona is definitely out. Like most everything - constant evaluation and communication being done. Sounds like we will have a mid-September guidance from NCAA w/hoops.

Question- Probably already been asked, but what's the most likely scenario for the upcoming basketball seasons (M & W) as we sit here today?

Answer - Every day is a new one - I know we will only go forward with all of the participants' health / safety at the forefront of the decision-making. We are all hopeful that means starting the season on November 10. We will learn more from football coming up soon. We need rapid testing.

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's University Director of Athletics Mike Cragg has been named to the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee. His two-year term will run through the 2021-22 academic year.

The NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee is responsible for oversight of regular season and championships administration in sports other than football, men's basketball and women's basketball, including supervision of qualification and selection procedures for national championships. The committee's central focus is prioritizing the enhancement of the student-athlete academic and athletic experience while promoting student-athletes' personal growth and leadership development.

"I am deeply honored to be afforded this tremendous opportunity to represent St. John's University and the BIG EAST Conference on a national level," said Cragg. "I look forward to working with my fellow committee members to enhance the overall experience for thousands of student-athletes and to help further advance Division I sports."

The Competition Oversight Committee reviews recommendations from sports committees and processes other issues related to administration of those championships. The sports committees, other than football and men's and women's basketball, report directly to the Competition Oversight Committee.

@MikeCraggSJU If there is a basketball season this fall, I think it would be a great idea to implement some sort of virtual tip off. Tip off is my favorite day on campus and my time at St. John's will be coming to an end soon, a live stream show would be an excellent replacement.

Response
Thanks. We are working up some ideas on this, including virtual/access season “tickets” if health officials deem crowds to be unsafe during the regular season. Our @StJohnsCreative, @RedStormTix and many others are hard at work! Appreciate your support!

When I first read this I thought Cragg was saying it and I freaked a little until I read it again and realized it was a question coming in

has anyone here renewed their season tickets?

this is the first time since i finished school 18 years ago that i won't renew. even during the norm years and recession, i made the financial sacrifice to make it work.

but with a new baby its just not worth the risk.

I love what Mike Cragg has done for the school and the professionalism he brings. Just can't help but have this sinking feeling that he will get scooped up by a school who can present him with a better opportunity, whenever that may be. Remember he came from Duke, so he may have his eyes set on a job like that before long. That being said, he never appears to act like someone who has a foot out the door, which I can appreciate.

I sent an email to Mike Cragg asking about the Basketball schedule, his reply as follows:

Re: MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE- 2020-21

Rich -

Thanks for writing and your interest in the upcoming men's basketball season. You ask a great question - and we don't know the answer yet.  The NCAA Council is supposed to give us a new starting date later this week and then the Big East will draw up schedules for the conference games.  My bet will be that we are several weeks away from a public schedule - around ‪October 1‬?

A lot of unknowns - please stay safe and heathy!

Best -

Mike

I renewed my tickets. The school was very gracious about letting me put a deposit down and paying the remainder off by December 1st. I think it has been mentioned that if there is no season you have the following options.
1 - Refund
2 - Defer to next season
3. Contribute the money

I renewed despite the uncertainty. There are options if the season doesn't take place or if fans are not allowed into arenas.

Congrats on the new baby! Remember, if you want to be a good parent, make sure he or she is a Red Storm fan! Some good infant Red Storm apparel on the campus online store. Bought some things for my grandkids.

can't believe he's been here 2 years already. time flies.

Figuring six months of orientating on front end and then six months of COVID response, only been a year in between to really try to make progress. Grateful he came to take on a project.

St. John's basketball is less of a "mom and pop" show with The Honorables Mike Cragg and CMA on board.

They are both by all means exceptional individuals to be leading SJU going forward. It does not change the fact that they are hampered by the lack of financial resources to upgrade facilities. They both are aware that winning first may improve the financial outlook, but not change the fact that delays in upgrading facilities impede our ability to attract and retain top notch talent. We are on the right path though.

Thanks Otis
I have no ( or little ) doubt we are headed back to respectability and appearances in the tourney. We are FORTUNATE
to have these two stellar college basketball powers on out side - who could have believed after decades of poor choices that we would have experienced Duke and an experienced Arkansas men leading the Storm. Doesn't get much better than this. Time will tell. I believe it will tell an amazing story.

all the best and congrats to redman4Life on the baby!!!.
Fatherhood can be the best.

I did the same.

Legitimate question on this, since I don't know the answer (perhaps Beast or another informed poster can respond).

We always discuss our shortcomings in facilities. A few friends of mine are Seton Hall boosters. They too are always complaining about their facilities and believe it has made Willard's recruiting challenging, especially early before they had any success, but even now coming off their best season in like 20 years. And they tell me our practice facilities are 1000 times better than the Hall's. Relatedly, Lavin and to some extent Mullin were able to secure 4 or even 5 star kids, despite our facilities. What drove that success if the lack of top notch facilities is such an impediment? Was it that Lavin was simply such a skilled recruiter he could "paper" over that and/or that Mullin was fortunate with Ponds always wanting to stay home and some of the other 4/5 star kids we landed (Heron, Simon, etc) coming via the transfer route in which facilities may not be nearly as big of a deal for a kid that has seen a Power 5 school and decided the grass is greener?

Mark this day as the day St. John's turned the corner on restoring our basketball. Mike was hired on the strength of his role in managing basketball operations at Duke, but has proven to be a strong, decisive, intelligent, and passionate, communicative leader. He is so darned active on social media, so responsive to any fan contacting him via email. He is almost single handedly restoring our fan base with his openness and willing to exchange ideas with any follower of our program.

Just a side note to Mike Repole, who I do hope will someday return to be a strong benefactor of our program: It was the very same Board of Trustees that Repole maligned who interviewed and selected Cragg. Get on board MR, you can have a voice, so long as you know you aren't THE voice.

Hi Rob,

It's a great question, so let me take a swipe at it. I think the most important thing is to have a winning program that gives our players the best chance to showcase their talents to a world wide audience - the NCAA tournament. If you have a top 5 program, our facilities can be at Jamacia high school and it wouldn't hurt too badly. However, if you want to be a top program and are not, the lack of top facilities hurt our chances to attract top recruits.

Yes, Lavin had success recruiting but if you recall, it wasn't sustained, and it wasn't enough. Recruiting at St. John's always seems to be pushing a ball uphill. It's funny, though. Our nearby competitors for students - Hofstra, Adelphi, Molloy, each further from NYC than SJU - all promote and attract students from out of state because of proximity and access to Manhattan. So, for students at least, that's a big plus.

Our practice facilities are first class, and that's also a plus. However, when I toured the basement of Carnesecca Arena last summer, NOTHING had changed over forty years except EVERYTHING was 40 years older. It is a decrepit dungeon. The weight room where athletes work out is down there, and while they were in process of upgrading it, just imagine a recruit walking into a school where athletic exercise facilities rival Equinox, above ground with beautiful surroundings, state of the art equipment and awesome aesthetics. Athletic department offices need to be upgraded seriously as well, and hopefully the Athletic department will unveil a master plan for supporters to get behind.

To your point, I've been told that Cameron is an aged, decrepit stadium, with even less space between bleacher seats than CA. For now, fans cram in shoulder to shoulder and consider themselves the lucky ones who got tickets. After K, we will see if they make a major investment there, and they probably will have to.

The short answer is, Yes, you can build a winning program without first class facilities, but the uphill push is much steeper with a much lower chance of long term success. VIllanova very smartly allocated a ton of money towards upgraded athletic facilities, but importantly, alumni ponied up BEFORE two national championships, with money donated for an overhaul to the Pavillion ($22 million by Finneran in 2014). But to be fair, Jay Wright had already established VIllanova as the class of the league well before then.

The bottom line is that programs can get establish moderate success, or lightning in a bottle intermittent success without first rate facilities. But to build a sustainable, winning program, where recruits coming here see facilities that are as good as anyone's, will take a considerable investment. The sooner we do that, the faster we can build a sustainable, consistent winner.
