Neil Allen + Rick Ownby = Mets HOF!  Congrats to Mex, who became the best everyday player the Amazin’s ever had (at that point) the minute he walked into the clubhouse.  If defense counted for anything in the minds of the voters he would have been in Cooperstown years ago.

Hope we have a season to actually hold the ceremony.

Also let's get Kris Bryant.

His ability superceded the numbers.  At first base he was incredible, the best I ever saw.  He had the arm of an outfielder, and the glove and range of a shortstop.   Did not have home run power but did have extra base power. Tough to strikeout, especially in big situations.

He belongs in Cooperstown.   A true leader on the field.

In one of the 1986 team documentaries, one of the players recalled mound visits and setting up strategy for the following hitter...
"We let Gary talk, but it was Keith who set the defense, and the one everyone listened to"

When the trade was first made, some fans were concerned about a logjam at first base..."We already have Dave Kingman, we don't need another first baseman."...didn't take long for that issue to settle.

Congratulations Mex!

I love the Hernandez story where Ron Darling was on the mound early in his tenure with the Mets (pre "Carter).

Three times Darling peered in for a sign and three times he shook the sign off.   Hernandez called time, jogged to the mound and said to Darling, "if you shake off the sign again and throw a fastball I'm going to come back and beat the shit out of you right here on the mound."

Darling didn't tempt fate.

Keith made the Mets into winners every bit as much as Gil Hodges did in 69.

Plus, he was not a rah rah bs guy.  His teammates respected him.
