In 2004 when VaTeck, Miami and Boston College left the Big East I recall reading that former Syracuse Athletic Director Jake Crothemal said that those schools had left the Big Eat to play the "southern schools" and that Syracuse University would no longer schedule the 3 school to prevent them from getting recruiting exposure in the northeast. My understanding is that by and large the other Big East schools also attempted to isolate the schools that fled to the ACC.

Jake Crothemal was a very smart man. St.John's and the other Big East teams should follow Jake's advice and refuse to schedule Syracuse University, Pittsburgh and West Virginia for future basketball and football games.

Syracuse, Pitts, and West Virginia left the Big East for dead; in particular scoundrel West Virginia is seeking to avoid the plain meaning of the Big East Bylaws in which West virginia agreed to that it would remain in the conference for 27 months after its termination notice is served.

Do not give Syracuse or Pitts, or West Virginia the opportunity to play in Madison Square Garden. Granted the Garden may allow them to play in the Garden but that game will have less meaning if not against the local St.John's team. Likewise Villanova should attempt to keep the 3 schools out of Philly, G'town should attempt to keep them out of Washington DC, etc.

Let Syracuse, Pitts, and West Virginia play the "southern school".

Not because we lost today, I would not mind a bit of the BE let all 3 leave after this year. If they dont want to be a member then they shouldn't have the privledge of winning any BE championships. Lets start playing teams that want to be part of the best conference in the country.

If I recall correctly there is at least 1 full year (perhaps 2 years) remaining in the Big East's TV contracts. I don't know how happy the TV networks would  be with 3 less teams in the Big East and what dollar concessions the Big East would suffer from mot having SU, Pitts, and West Virginia games to offer next season.

So, who besides SJU, gets hurt by us not scheduling Syracuse in the future? NOBODY that's who! MSG college basketball will gladly give them any open dates they wish as they will sell out any and all intersectional games scheduled there. Just like Duke plays games there in any of the myriad of MSG hops tourneys they put on each year!
Duke, Kansas, Syracuse and others have large local followings that MSG, the Prudential Center in Newark and the new Brooklyn arena will try to woo with large financial guarantee and the lure of dressing in the Knicks/Nets NBA dressing rooms as the home team. And those teams all love coming to NYC to play with the fan base and the chance to recruit locally.

We have only ourselves to blame. I think in a few years with Lavin we will be beating them semi regularly but their is no excuse in the world for St Johns fans not to be showing up en masse to the garden. No reason at all

Duke vs. Syracuse at MSG may fill the Garden, but other than their own fans, there would be little interest in NY or from the local newspapers. In any event, if I were SJu I wouldnt help syracuse, pitt or WVU recruit in ny byu keeping them on the schedule.

Thank goodness today's game wasn't at 9PM.

WW3 would have broken out if the crowd was well oiled.

This game sort of reminded me of Mullin's freshman year when we were embarrassed at MSG by G'Town by 30.

If SJU really wanted to make money, they would ticket gate Syracuse and make them buy packages to SJU games to get the Cuse game. SJU would comemt on the sitive side financially in that deal as well and this game would have been sold out anyway.

I didn't say Duke vs Syr! Of course that would sell out. What I was saying was MSG will give them their OWN dates to fill the Garden. MSG is all about filling up all open dates with sell out hoops games. Ticket sales, concessions is what drives all these arenas, not a 6-7000 projected Cincy vs SJU gate.

Something else to chew on tonight: if the Knicks were not at MSG tonight and it was free to host the Iona vs Manhattan game, how many of their alums would have bought tix to watch that game on this balmy Saturday night? Care to dare ten thousand?

PS...our local sports show on SNY just called MSG the Cuses home away from home!

If you reread my initial post you will see that I conceded that SU would have access to the Garden but I would not lend a Big East opponent to play them. Let SU line up another opponent for an out of conference game but don't allow a Big East team to be the measuring stick.

I do not see SU wanting to play more than 1 or 2 games in the Garden because that would reduce the number it can play at the Carrier Dome where their profit would be much greater.

If we can't beat them either on the court or in the stands it's our own fault. You can't be the best by avoiding a fight. You punch that f&ck in the nose and knock him down.

That's what we need to do. We don't run from fights. We are St Johns

No matter what we think the truth is that SJu rents the Garden to make more $$ and today generated more $$ than any game this season, no matter whose ass was in a seat. I would have to guess that Monasch noticed that and felt pretty good about today's crowd, all things considered.

Hollywood Tans here I come!

If syracuse wants to play us, we should only play them at the dome. I would give them no exposure in nyc, by playing them at the garden. they made the decision to leave the big east to play acc football. a decision I don't understand but that is coming from someone who has no interest in football, be it pro, college, high school, etc..

Agree agree agree x1000 as those of us who did show up had to endure a sea of orange and a group of the most obnoxious, low life's ever to congregate in a basketball arena can attest.
