I don't know Greg McDermott but coaching college BB in the 2000's and with the makeup of his teams, I can't beleive he is really a racist. A stupid remark for sure. But I can't beleive he is an actual racist.
Oddly, I also happen to think he mixed his "sayings"; the saying he meant to use, is "let's stick together, let's not have anyone leave the reservation". That expression though is also offensive so it would still be "out of bounds", but not as insensitive as the one he used.
Heat of the moment utterances should get some slack, when they involve a thought or idea that is not offensive at all, i.e., they had just lost a tough game and he wanted to keep his team united, so..... "Guys, let stick together, no internal fighting, no one leaving the stable or farm". He picked a very unfortunate alternate word. For that he has paid a price.
