The mistake he made was that he wasnt on the end line. If his toes were at the line the defense would have had Kobe choice but to foul him. He was a couple feet away which is why he got tied up.

But he didnt have to. Had he retreated to the corner and simply held the ball far away from his body, protecting it with his back, and safely out of bounds he would have been fouled. Instead he panicked. Timeout would have worked but by cowering to cover the ball invited the tie up
