Max Hooper Shoots All Threes

Smart playing at this level & accepting role of pure shooter. Good for him. Anytime I see his name, the image of him going into crab position getting tied up in gut wrenching loss to PC comes to mind.

Jeez he's hitting 45%?

I know it's weaker competition but still.
Yeah we did a great job utilizing him. But than again we didn't need a three point shooter as St. John's always has a plethora of those.

you're right gut wrenching after that Lavin knew he could not be trusted and down went his playing time.

Was Lavin's fault for even having him in at that point in the game.

Outside shooting in basketball is a lot like being a running back in football in this regard:. In Paper Lion, George Plimpton was astonished at how quickly holes opened and closed, and simply wasn't fast enough to find the hole before it was too late. In basketball as the competition gets better, you have less time to get off a shot. Rush even a tiny bit and your shot is off. Its not surprising that some of Hooper's successful outings,at SJU came in garbage time, where defense is an afterthought. I'm happy for him that he found the right level for himself but that success doesnt mean he was a misused big east or Ivy league player

He actually qualifies as one of the top 3 pt shooters by percentage at just over 40 percent.

Stop, imagine it was jakarr who got fouled and missed the ft's. Same people would say 'why not have your best shooter in the game?' That one is squarely on the player. And good to see him doing well.

Remember the reason Hooper was in the game was everyone's favorite Jesus from Philly was benched

At the time it seemed like a good call to have guards and the best ft shooters on the floor. There was no reason to believe at that juncture that Max would freeze. It wasnt a horrendous idea but his feet were too far from the baseline and there was too much time on the clock. Had both feet been planted a couple of inches from the baseline providence would have had no choice but to foull had he extended the ball out of bounds. When he realized he was too far away from the baseline he cowered over the ball to.protect it and the rest is history. Effectively ended his sju career

Hooper's dad is very sick with cancer. Tonight was Max's last home game at Oakland and his father was in the stands. I hope they can upset Valpo in the conference tournament and make it to the NCAA's.

Awesome moment at the end where Max ran into the stands after the final buzzer to hug his dad who was watching the game from a stretcher on the concourse.

I hear you Andrew and wish Max all the very best. Unfortunately there is an equally touching story on Valparaso. They have a freshman pg from Montreal whom I know for years named Tevon Walker who has overcome unbelievable family hardships / problems to be able to just stay in school. Perhaps he would like certain things to remain confidential so I will not disclose the nature of the problems but suffice to say it would be fantastic if his mother Liz who is also battling a different form of illness could get to watch Tevon play in the big dance.

Didn't Walker play in the NCAA last year? I saw his name in box scores.

Perhaps you are correct and he is a sophomore. My point was he has lived through horrible circumstances and I wish the kid and his mom all the very best. At least it will be a great story for one of the two. And yes Tevon will have the chance to get there again in the future. Best of luck to both players and teams.

I saw that on the highlights on ESPN. Very touching.
