Maui Invitational 2015

Understand that we could be playing in Hawaii in 3 years.

Coach may have bad memories of Maui - in the 2001 Invitational, star freshman Cedric Bozeman injured his knee. He tried to play, but the Bruins were eliminated in the 2nd round by Ball State. Two games later Ced had to shut it down for weeks for arthroscopic surgery - the beginning of the end of the quickness and lateral movement that had made him a top 20 prospect at Point Guard. A series of injuries/surgeries would plague him the next 5 seasons at UCLA - tho he led the Pac 10 in assists as a Jr, started in the NCAA Title game as a senior (at SF!), made the NBA (brielfly), and holds the D-League single game record for assists (23), he was never really close to the same player.

This would be a huge coup. Obviously it depends on the field but Maui has become the premiere pre-season exempt Tourney in the country. And in some years it can get a ridiculous field.

Last year's field had Kansas, Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA. 5 NCAA teams, an NIT team and UCLA.

This year has Marquette, Texas and North Carolina.

Along with the NIT and the Coaches vs Cancer it historically has the best/most competitive fields of any of the pre-season Tourney's. It is why ESPN sends Bilas/McDonoguh/Raftery out their to the games.

Don't know how close we actually are to playing in this (no link provided, but jerseyshorejohnny has been good with stuff like this in the past), but Kansas is tentativly scheduled to be in this tournament:

Kansas makes sense. You cannot participate in a pre-season exempt tourney more then ONCE every four years. Obviously that is why these Tourney's have different fields every year.

But Duke is making going back to Maui the first opportunity they get a regular occurence. They won it in 1997, then went back in 2001 and won it again. They won it in 2007 and then 4 years later they won it again in 2011.

Duke would be eligible again in 2015 as would Kansas since both were in the field in 2011.

If Duke is in the field and we are then we 'probably' wouldnt see them on our schedule that year.

G'town played Memphis in Maui, and then turned around and played them a couple of weeks later in DC.

I know it happens but its pretty rare. Most schools don't want to play someone twice.
