Matt A. Article From the Atheltic

The line that jumped out at me:

Heron, a former five-star recruit from Connecticut, has applied to the NCAA for a hardship waiver in order to be eligible immediately. Such a waiver is a long shot....

Here's hoping that insight is off base.

The issue I have is the equating of recruiting transfers and the success of recruiting transfers. Anyone can recruit transfers, let's see high success on the floor before we call it a success. Running off names of transfers is not the same as being a successful strategy.

They were successful at ISU because they made 4 straight NCAAs under Hoiberg. After being completely irrelevant in the BIG 12 for years Hoiberg was successful and in just 5 years made ISU relevant in the Big 12.

Can SJU have a winning record once before we call this strategy successful?

It's a good thing that Matt is able to do pretty well with transfers. This day in age it's needed more than ever...but we also have to be careful not to rely on them. It can negatively impact team chemistry and we need to be able to get some 4 year guys to really keep some continuity. The staff gets a B+ for transfers (would've been A if they could've found 1 more big) and an F for HS recruits. DePaul is outrecruiting us so please don't mention how they're just waiting for us to win games.

I wouldn't give Ponds, Williams and Marcellus F grades. On quantity of high school recruits maybe a B and on the 3 I mentioned a B+.

Going to leave out Earlington because he is by any account a long shot but last time I looked, Williams Roberts and Trimble were HS recruits. Obviously they don't count because they don't fit your narrative. Just curious, how did Simon and Clark and Ahmed and Owens "negatively impact team chemistry"? Haven't heard anyone complain about Dixon or Heron. In fact, you (and others) have posted that Heron is the key to our season, aren't you worried about team chemistry if he is eligible? The truth is in today's HS and AAU atmosphere players come and go regularly and players understand that a hell of a lot better than fans do.

They've recruited 4 classes, you named three players. ;)

I said they "can" negatively affect chemistry. It's generally harder to make that fit than having the same guy for 4 years. Realistically, we haven't gotten any stud HS recruits since Ponds. Transfers are good to plug holes but not to form an entire team IMO. That's why the examples like Iowa St. are rare. Please reference the 2019 recruiting news...we are among the only Big East programs to not have a 4 star and some have several already. Earlington is an end of the bench guy, but hopefully he surprises. If anyone looks at the past 3 years and our 2019 outlook on recruiting and comes away pleased, that is scary stuff. Once again, explain DePaul...and no I doubt they'd be paying players after they were already discovered to be doing so.

They've recruited 3 classes actually where they followed kids for the school year. I named kids that are here and left out those that left like Marcus LoVett, Ellison, Sima and Yakwe. IMO, none of those players were bad players for their roles, had they accepted that role but every kid thinks he can be an NBA player.;)

I'd give staff at least an A-, if not an, A for transfers Simon, Clark, Owens, Heron, Keita & Dixon w/o even taking into account the two guys who will sit this year. For HS recruits, agree it has been spotty to date, but they still probably deserve a C because they got Ponds and Lovett. I also believe Williams will start at some point in his career and Trimble is a solid sub; Ellison and Mussini would be the same if they hadn't left. That grade would go down if they strike out in 2019 which I do not believe will be the case.

My only issue with the HS recruiting is we are spending a ton of time chasing high level guys and the results haven't been there. Muhammad, Naz Reid (didn't even make his top 10?), Jordan Brown, Rawle, Justin Tucker - even guys we've landed have been rife with issues - Zach Brown, Sid, Diakite, etc. If we are going to be Transfer U, that's fine - let's just go with that then and spend the time wasted chasing these 4-5 star kids around the country on player development. I know we're not going to get every guy but our hit rate on these kids seems really low to me. I could be wrong. I mean at some point, we need to start #closing on some of these kids.
