Marvin Clark

I wonder if Izzo is missing him with all the injuries.

More likely Clark is missing Izzo and realizing he could have had a significant role without sitting out a year. MSU's loss is our gain.

I only go by what a friend who went to MSU says. The fans loved him there. I am going to guess he will start for us or get major minutes.

He has to start next year, especially since we lack rebounders. Clark replaces Ellison in the starting lineup. Along with Ahmed and Owens we improve on the boards.

Had the Big 10 Network so saw bunch of his games. Plays hard and rebounds / defends. On offense he played on the perimeter from what I remember as he was undersized. Mostly backed up Brandon Dawson another undersized 4 though he was much more athletic. Solid player will be far and away our best frontcourt guy, but undersized and not a superstar or anything. Will be a good player. 12 and 6 or 7 would be my prediction.

To me as long as the two guards stay, the key for next year will be Ahmed / Ellison and Simon. Lovett and Ponds will be Lovett and Ponds and Clark will be solid. If we are to be significantly improved it will have to come from some combination of the first three I mentioned. Really intrigued by Simon. Hoping he is more refined or just less erratic Ellison.

Sadly don't expect a big turnaround for Yakwe but you never know.
I think the arrival of another useful big( Clark) will also help Owens. Need at least the same from him next year that he gave this year.

12 and 6 would be great. Given how much that level have production has helped us from Ahmed this year, adding another Ahmed-type producer would be great.

Also agree with your other post that having more size up front will help Owens. Alleviates some of the pressure he's been under.

Despite not being a true post player, Clark strikes me as the kind of guy who isn't going to get knocked off the block. As we've seen with Williams this year that simple attribute can go a long way underneath.

Have not seen a ton of him but from what I have he is a 3.5 that leans more 4. This should not only be a good fit in the system and pace this staff seems to want to play, but also should blend nicely with Ahmed who is a 3.5 that leans more 3. Think Owens, Ahmed, and Clark will play off each other nicely to form a pretty well-rounded front court both when on the court together and not. And that's before we see what the roster looks like in a few months.

Though my buddy Fun might disagree, numbers sometimes do lie. Clark's 12 and 6 will be much less agita inducing then Ahmed's was this year. If I remember correctly the announcers got on Clark about shooting threes, but his % was pretty good.

regardless of 12/6 a nice piece here will be having two guys: Clark and Simon that can guard the guys that we only have Ellison to matchup with. Clark should also be able to guard some of the power forward matchups. So we will have three guys that can matchup with those players that have done major damage to us from the beginning of the season - big, athletic 2-4s. This is program building. Having a roster of the right players and not just stats and star rankings. So now we still need a real banger to matchup with 4-5 depth and provide some more presence inside on offense. With our guards great hands and runs the floor well would do great in our offense.

Key point. We don't have natural defensive matchups for teams that are big/long 2-4. This Saturday is a good example - even setting aside Delgado, we don't matchup well with Sonogo/Desi/Carrington. Think about the difference with Simon on Carrington and Clark on Sonogo with Ahmed on Desi. Completely different landscape defensively.

It's such a void this year that think we have a chance to go from being a bad defensive team to at least an above-average one next year.

as anyone seen him in practice this year. I ask because he has had leg problems 2 of the last 3 years. We might have another Williams on our hands

12 and 6 was just a prediction. In sports that is what fans do, throw numbers around. I forgot you are an intangible kind of guy. Unfortunately you can't really quantify what intangibles a guy will bring. I am sure he will pump fake a few times and get his shot blocked against some bigger players from time to time. That should bring back a lot of good memories for you. ;) Whatever the stats may be I think he will be a good player for us. What this team really could use though is a player that can finish in traffic and supply some easy baskets for us. Not sure that is something Clark will be able to help with.

Agreed. That is why I said previously when people were predicting a win over SHU that I thought they were our toughest matchup. Not to say best team (though I did think pre-season they'd be top 2 or 3 in the conf) . Just for us, tough to match up with them. As our roster continues to balance out, we can get into a position to play any team.

Absolutely. Would probably rather see Butler a third time in the BET than SHU, despite Butler being a much better team than SHU. Just better/worse matchups for us.

Stats are important but I do believe in things like maturity, chemistry, leadership and even humility, that make great teams but don't always show in an obvious way in stat lines. The things I'm discussing here (matchups) aren't really intangibles. They are just a little deeper than the superficial and obvious parts of the stat line like points scored and I don't believe that you can sum up the value of a player like "12 and 6." If you've been paying attention, the fact that big, athletic opponents have had their way with us all season, is not intangible just like last season the lack of a point guard wasn't. Not obvious in the bubble gum stat line but obvious in the games played.

You are the 2nd or 3rd person who has posted, if our 2 guards stay...Where was it was brought up that Lovett or Ponds may leave? I don't see either leaving....

2nd or 3rd? Where have you been? Double digits at the very least I would imagine.

Rumor is Lovett wants to start to get paid to play basketball somewhere next year. Also have heard he is not what you would call punctual for various things.

Ponds thing I think was started on JJ about some cryptic Tweet or something of him not being happy? Not as clear on that one.

No idea of the validity of any of that and hope they stay. Sadly since I really like both of them and We are ST John's would not be shocked if either or both left.

OK I had seen Baldi post something on the other board about Lovett leaving then a month later he had him in his starting line up for 2017-18. Lovett seems happy here , and Ponds isn't going anywhere i bet they are here next season.
