Former St. John’s star and NBA forward Malik Sealy died in a car accident 12 years ago today, May 20.

Sealy was driving home in Minnesota from a birthday party for friend and teammate Kevin Garnett, when he was struck by a drunk driver who was traveling the wrong way down the highway. Sealy’s SUV reportedly did not have an airbag and he was not wearing his seatbelt.

Sealy averaged 18.9 points per game over his four seasons at St. John’s, and was an All-American in 1991-92. He was drafted 14th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 1992 NBA draft.

He was a New York-born prospect who stayed in the city to play his college ball, something that traditionally helped St. John’s to build a strong program.

His best collegiate season came when he was a senior, averaging 22.6 points and 6.8 rebounds. In the NBA, he just over 10 points per game in his career.

Since his death, the Minnesota Timberwolves have retired his jersey number. Garnett, who was close with Sealy, has a tattoo honoring him.

RIP Malik. Kevin Garnett was a big Malik fan growing up and wanted to play at St. John's because of Malik, wore 21 also cause of Malik. Garnett and Joe Smith both have Sealy tatts to honor him.

Great Johnny God bless his soul!

What happened to his son?

He went to the United Nations School and he's now a freshman at Laguardia--the same school Jon Scheiman played at before walking on at St. John's. Malik Jr. played varsity as a frosh, but played sparingly. I don't think his best contributions in college will come on the basketball court.

The young man is an excellent artist an certainly has a bright future ahead of him.

A kind, warm and delightful person. An actor , a fashion designer , and so talented that he probably could have been anything that he set his mind on being.

Kevin Garnett's mentor, best friend and confidante.

Kevin and Sam Mitchell wear tattoos memorializing Malik..

His dad was a bodyguard for Malcolm X, and Malik was named after Malcolm X..

A terrible loss, terrible !

I went the same four years at Malik (88-92) and like most of us, I could tell he was much more than a talented baskeball player.

I'll never forget hearing the awful news from Michael Kay as I was listening to a NYY game on the radio.

I can remember the exact spot I was driving and the chills I got once I heard the news. RIP Malik. RIP.

I went during those same four years, as well. He was a very nice guy on top of being such a fantastic player. You always knew that we'd compete hard with Malik on the floor. Not a vocal leader, but certainly led by example with his play and his attitude. His death was a shock and still hard to believe.

One of the greatest Redmen ever, as both a person and an athlete. And with all due respect to the writer, he did not die in a car accident, he was killed by a drunk driver. RIP Malik.

I was there the same 4 years as all you guys. We must have had classes together and probably know each other to some extent. LOL

A long long time ago when redmen.com had our first party at mustang sallys ( maybe in 2000 or 2001 ) when I met Kranmars/AR/Alfredo ( we had all been arguing/debating for a while about politics on the site ) when he walked in we looked at each other and were like " hey which poster are you because we knew each other from going to school together " and then we realized we had been arguing for months or maybe a year about politics without realizing we actually knew each other. lol

Well the way you two kept your identities so well disguised with your vague screen names would have made it hard to pick you out earlier I guess. ; )

Yeah it kind of sucked finally being "outed" and people finding out my name was Mike Maher Jr :)

And to think I put so much time into trying to disguise my identity here in my handle
