As Moose had correctly suggested given that Malik is playing for us it is no longer necessary to post in the 2015 recruiting section about him.
Safe to say his recent play has exceeded everyone's expectations. Not a star but this badly injured high school player who missed a great deal of pt has come on very nicely. He is playing the 1 and 2 and is contributing offensively and defensively.
The piece on him was great and like Ron M he seems to be a great teammate. Coach Richmond raves about his work ethic which is something that can be contagious on a young team.
I truly look forward to his progression over the next three seasons. Originally , I too thought pt would be very hard to come by for him next season , but I can see the kid getting solid 15 minutes a game next year barring no major injuries. And if he continues to work as the coaches say who knows.
Good for you Malik, continue to prove us all wrong. :)

unfortunately, I don't share the same optimism on Malik. He has the tools to be a better player and has improved on the offensive end, but continues to leave his man open for open threes and make careless turnovers (especially those passes from the baseline to the top of the arc that seem to be intercepted just about every time). Hopefully he works on his game and will be a good contributor by his Junior or Senior year. Seems to be a good teammate and rep of the university.

In fairness to him and the staff there has been a ton to learn this season on every front. However , at present we are 12 deep for next season , assuming Williams recovers, and anyone who does not play D, or rebound , box out, etcetera will find it very hard to get pt going forward. With Malik's attitude and work ethic I don't see him being a player who doesn't do what is asked of him.

Ellison is doing fine, considering how much of the load he has had to carry lately. Like most players on this team, he would be a complementary player on a good team but he has to play major minutes right now. He is aggressive going to the basket, and he seems to have a good nose for the ball. He needs to work on his defense, especially off the ball help. He's just a freshman, he will learn with good coaching. I think he's been a pleasant surprise overall.

Nice discussion RMN!
We need to give these kids a chance before we have permanent critiques on where they'll fit in - each develops blossoms matures at a different pace
And furthermore
How can anyone tell what's inside the heart of a 17-18-19 year old???
Good for you Malik! I know you're making your Dad - and many fans - proud in how you've progressed!!!

all the best

I think he's inherited many of his mom's genes cause he surely hasn't earned the nickname "Never Nervous" as of yet. But in fairness to the kid, he was thrown into this situation due to Musse being beaten up and SJ not having anyone to play PG. He has shown improvement with each game. Will he be a first round draft pick like his Dad? Probably not, but that doesn't mean he can't improve his game and be a quality4 year product and go on to play pro ball somewhere.

Should be a good four year player. His size will get him decent time in complementary role next year in my opinion.

Sorry, I gave up on him three weeks into his college career.
I am not going to go back on that now.

Huge off-season for Malik. This year he will either establish himself as a piece of the program's future, or will be a 2017 transfer candidate.

Once healthy, he did show an ability to get to the foul line, self-confidence, and a decent shot. He will need to continue to work on his shot, footwork/speed and defense.

Never going to be a star, but he could be a solid contributor. Which is more than I thought early last season.

not his biggest fan but the staff is raving about him saying he has been tearing up campus run this last month :). His improvement together with his backcourt size are sorely needed.

Had to play the point a lot. Should be much better as the third or fourth guard.

Should be much better with a year of play behind him.
Should be much better as he will not be required to play the point and will be the third or fourth guard as you point out.
Should be much better as less will be expected of him as there is more talent on the team.
Should be much better as he has been busting his butt as Happy pointed out And 8 months of hard work can make a huge difference.
should be a productive four year player.

Don't bet on Malik not starting..those wanting a starting backcourt of Mussini /Lovett/ ponds ( whichever combo works for everyone) have to remember that Ponds much like Mussini was last year is not physically ready as of now for the big east.

The key will be whether he improves his shot. I liked his ability to get to the basket and thought he was a solid defender for a freshman. If he learns to consistently hit that 15-18 foot jumper, he'll be a very good player for this team.

And I disagree with fans saying automatically putting him as the 3rd or 4th guard. Nobody has seen LoVett or Ponds play at the college level and Mussini was terrible at the end of last season. If Malik has really improved his overall game this offseason, I could easily see him as a starter next season.

I suspect this thread is a fantasy. Our coaches are smart enough not to credit a player at this stage as such indirectly discredits others

He has some great physical talent. I'd like to see his decision making improve which you hope to almost always see from a Frosh. I'd like to see him focus on being a complimentary player i.e. rebounding, hustle, movement off the ball and loving defense. Seemed to me that whenever he was on the floor he wanted to be "the man" trying to make things happen. He needs to let things come to him instead which will reduce his turnovers and bad shot selection. Ultimately he has the potential to develop into a very versatile player like Postell who played 2-4 for us depending upon the lineup. Postell developed a nice outside shot over time but his athletic ability was always there. I never felt like he was forcing things which I did most of the season with Ellison.

Here is a question which I tend to believe, YOU CAN ONLY IMPROVE TO THE LEVEL OF YOUR TALENT
