Major Gift to Basketball Program From Board of Trustee Chairman

Real nice.  Thank you!
I like what Father Shanley said, that the basketball program is like a billboard for the university.  Go Red Storm!

great news and very generous...

just hope its not part of a hostile KKR takeover

Wow...what a generous man!!

Fr. Shanley starting off on a good note.  I'm sure this $1M will help big time, hopefully for new improvements or paying off some of the more recent work already complete.

Outside of a Carnesecca Arena overhaul, from a BB program perspective, how far does $1M carry us, and how much more is realistically needed annually to propel?

To my knowledge, a Carnesecca arena overhaul is not on the radar whatsoever.    I think this generous gift is a great start for the AD, and also is a sign of support for both Father Shanley, who is totally aware of the AD needs at this point, and for Mike Cragg, who totally has a great command of the improvements we need.

Not quite two years, the board of trustees took a ton of vicious criticism by a carrot dangling donor viewed by many as a potential savior for the athletic department.   Now just two years later, we can clearly see that the board has been instrumental in the hire of Mike Cragg, Mike Anderson, and Father Shanley.    Prior to Janetscheks $1 million donation to the athletic department, he had been extremely generaous to the university at large.   The outgoing chairman of the board of trustees donated $5 million to the now Collins School of Professional Studies.

Hope this donation will be the first of many to build our atheltic department into a highly competitive entity that can attract the best athletes to St. John's.    My guess is that the overall plan may take $10 million or more to make us competitive.   More importantly than that number is the number of alumni and fans that can get behind the athletic department with donations within their budget.   I do think Father Shanley is open to making an investment in athletics, but our part is to get behind that with our wallets.   If we could double the size of the R-W club even with the minimum donation, that would be awesome.    This would make a huge impact statement to Father Shanley, and the more support we give the AD, the more he will find ways for the University's cash strapped endowment to make an investment in athletics.
