A good time to post this reminder to all that four members of our famed "Wonder Five" were, in fact, Jewish.
So, Judaism plays an important role in what was probably our most glorious piece of history.

At his 90th birthday celebration at Antoine's in Queens Village, Coach C. was looking pretty frail and infirmed. Bill Schaeffer brought a microphone to Lou's table to have him speak sitting down, but Coach wouldn't have any of it, and looking all of his 90 years, rose unsteadily to speak, gripping the back of his chair for balance as he clasped the wireless mic with the other hand.
He spoke about how he got hooked on SJU basketball early as a student and heard many tales about the Wonder 5. Gathering strength as he spoke he began to give an oral history of SJU basketball going back that far. "I had heard so many stories about how great the Wonder 5 was, that when I had a chance to meet them at an alumni reunion, I thought they wold be monsters - huge guys!", Looie rambled on, now in full force as the years peeled back to 80s, then 70s, then 60s as his health and stature grew. "Then I met them! I was so excited to get a chance to meet them. You know what? They were about 5 foot 6 each! ", he rasped, and he brought the house down. Only Looie. Our icon.
Happy Rosh Hashanah to all Jewish redmen, who certainly are a huge part of our St. John's Vincentian, New York City tradition.
