LoVett, Ponds Make SI Top Frosh Scoring List

Thanks, Paultz,
You are all over this stuff and I appreciate your efforts. I am excited to see these two kids in action, I actually think Ponds is underrated. Also, other posters have mentioned how Marcus Lovett took advantage of the "missed" season. This will be a test as we have the two transfers sitting out this season. Hopefully they are taking advantage of this time as well.

SI's projections for the top 50 freshman scorers (by ppg). Washington's Fultz, Duke's Tatum, then who? http://on.si.com/2dieefg

LoVett #12
Ponds #50

I think they both can score more than the estimates but not sure that would necessarily be a good thing.

@ShamorieP congrats on preseason honor @StJohnsBBall gives opportunities that are unreal, good luck on the season...#sjubb

Not so sure Ponds will start. Not sure of Mullin's mindset, but Looie would have started Mussini or Ellison based on his preferring not to start freshman. Add in that Ponds is a better option at the point than Mussini, he could be used to spell Lovett off the bench. Or if facing a big backcourt, Ellison may be the best choice. With so many variables in place, there may be some volatility in the staring lineup until things settle down. Lovett, Yakwe and Sima will likely be in the starting lineup from day one, and probably Ahmed at the 3. The starting guard opposite Lovett may change from game to game. Having options available is a good thing.

Gotta love DLO.

Glad he was able to work out his inner demons and mature in his time at SJU. Lavin gets kudo for his hand in DLo's turnaround.

Agreed, and of course D-Lo gets the most credit, as it is always up to the kid to see the wrong in his ways. Shame that Jordan couldn't see Dee's turnaround and learn from the same. Was mentioned in the past posts that Jordan had a chance to go the D-Lo route via a summer with John Lucas, and turned it down to go back to Philly as he always did. Given what we know, I don't think even a guy like Lucas - who has helped so many - would have had any real impact on Sheed.

These guys will look way past those projections.

Dlo is a guy who would look great coaching at st johns one day. What a recruiter he would be.

For those that know better than I, does LoVett get consideration for freshman of the year after sitting out a year, or is he excluded from that conversation as a redshirt freshman?

I believe Sumner from X was eligible to win it last year after similar situation. My guess is coaches would rather see a true fresh win but thats just a guess.
