Just arrived home from The Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic held at The North Hempstead Country Club.

A huge success. Over $600K (gross) raised before the silent and public auctions.

This year's Honoree was Anthony Orso '85NDC (Staten Island), who is the CEO of CCRE and Executive Managing Director of Cantor Fitzgerald.

Kudo's to Mel Davis and SJU alumni Dom Camera and Paul Sciafani (a double alumnus) who did all the heavy lifting to make this event the most successful athletic development event in school history !!

Former St. John' splayers attending the event included: Bill Schaeffer, Frank Alagia, Bill Wennington, George Johnson, Tarik Turner, Zendon Hamilton, Anthony Mason Jr., Terry Bross, Gerry Lawrence, Oscar Holt, Carmine Calzonetti and John Farmer.

Brian Mahoney and Ron Rutledge were also there.

John Franco was also in "the house" as was SJU Legend Jack Kaiser.

Former NBA/New York Knick players who attended included: Herb Williams, John Starks, Anthony Mason, Rory Sparrow, and Charles Smith.

The Master of Ceremonies was Bill Daughtry. Mike Breen also participated in the event.

Lav and Coach Keady also attended the dinner.

Today was the last day as a St. John's employee for Mel Davis and Mark Fratto.

Great seeing senior administrators including Fr. Levesque, Dean Mike Simon (Law School) and Dean Victoria Shoaf (Dean of The Tobin School of Business)

jerseyshorejohnny,

Thanks for your report.

I didn´t know that Mel Davis also leaves St. John´s. In one of my travels to New York I spoke to him before a St. John´s game. A fantastic guy. I wish him good luck.

Thanks.

Mel took an early retirement package.

A great, great person.

The quintessential St. John's man.

He will be greatly, greatly missed at SJU.

Damn that sucks. Mel is a great guy. We met his wife a couple of times at events. She is real nice also. Really classy guy Mel is

If I remember correctly, Mel left his SJU PLAYING CAREER EARLY? Drafted by the KNICKS.

I think Mel would likely hold a lot of our rebounding records or, at least booked more stats in his college resume, if he had played a full 4 years.

Others MAY KNOW MORE DEFINITIVELY whether Mel left school early?

Mel tore up his knee against Oral Roberts in the NIT in his Sophmore year, wound up being drafted by and playing for the Knicks.

He was a rebounding machine. I remember one game at CA against American and Kermit Washington when both had over 20 bounds.

Mel played as a Soph and as a Junior redshirted in his Senior year and left for the NBA with a year of eligiblity

Mel was in my English class. He attended two classes the entire semester and received a grade of A-.

Imagine what he would have gotten if he went to 4 classes

The minus was for attending the two classes. Had some classes with hoopsters who never showed up in class, cheated off me on tests-I got a C, hoop player got an A.

Shared a Theology class with Mel. He made the first class his one and only appearance and got an A.

Given the news that the NCAA just reopened the UNC investigation, I really hope that no one from that organization is reading this thread right now.

If they are, they are probably reading this thinking, "hmm, anything we can do to get the Heels off the hook..."

Took intro to astrophysics with Mel who not only attended just one class but also mocked the prof's interpretation of the Papaloizou-Pringle Instability theory. He still got an A.

Took 12 classes with Mel. I was put on academic probation and Mel made the Dean's list. What really hurt was the Italian courses we took together. I was a native speaking Italian and got 2 C's and Mel got 2 A's. A year later I said "Buon' Fortuno quest' anno in palacanestro" and he said he didn't speak Spanish.

Must have been Father Russell's class. He was affectionately called B+ Russell by ball players.

I think we got the point. Mel was an excellent student, who worked i dependently at home, and submitted quality work to his professors. Since attendance didn't count, he had no problem acing his classes.

Mel is a great guy; let’s drop these anecdotal (could be b.s. or sarcastic) stories.

It’s like those callers to sports talk radio who just have to tell the story about ballplayer so-and-so was “rude" to them , and who knows if it is even true or what the other facts are.

Could be sarcasm? Mel is a great guy! Just don't elbow him during the exhibition game against the Italian National team when he was at SJ! He cold-cocked the Italian center and was ejected from the game. The killer mellowed with age.....around when he was 50! LOL!
