Lou C Statue
This is hilarious. This school is pathetic.
Shouldn't surprise you though.

Unbelievable ... but then it took 52 years following his retirement for the university to finally put a statue of Joe Lapchick on campus, so are we really surprised with how it's treating Louie? Pathetic.

Statue of Lou C should be a slam dunk for the University . To be fair , we don’t know all the details of whether the School is working on it . Perhaps Jersey Shore Johnny would be the one to pursue with the right channels . At the worst , whatever the cost , Fans, Alums , Students could make donations to making a presentation Ceremony soon . It’s funny about Lou , even with our 20 year doldrums, basketball fans , not necessarily St John’s fans , all remember Louie fondly . Heritage is important and is one reason why a Resurgence for Basketball needs to happen . The University benefits in many ways, beyond just the Records . Villanova has become a great University over the last 30 years with the impetus being 3 NCAA Championships to spotlight the school . It worked for Notre Dame in Football .

Write a letter and a check. The Lapchick statue was paid by donations. No reason this shouldn't happen. Athletic development should be all over this, and this fundraising effort would be a layup for certain.

I emailed the school.

I read the article and thought it was great (thank you Paultz). I fail to see why posters on here used it as an opportunity to throw shots at the University.
If I read the article correctly, Hanlon(the Sculptor), built the statue of Looie, before it was commissioned by anyone. I doubt anyone knew of its existence before the article.
Now maybe JSJ or someone else can set up a fund so we can buy it and place it where it so rightly belongs. If we aren't taking shots at the team or staff, we turn to mocking the University. I find this childish and insensitive and it gets old after a while.
We all know the school does not move too rapidly, and at times it is frustrating, but there are many here, that LOVE the school, It provided, and continues to provide a great education to many!

I'll say the school doesn't move rapidly, Frank, Lou is what 92? Heard mjm looked into commissioning a statue of Chris Mullin but price quoted was too steep as it included a scorers table. :)

Maybe I am off base here. However, in reading the article this artist created a statue prior to it being commissioned. Now he wants SJU to step up and commission the statue. Ok fine.
So, I admit, I am ignorant on what "commission" means. Maybe someone here knows. If someone commissions a statue, I have two questions. 1- Do they have the ability to be consulted about the design? 2- Isn't there an agreed upon cost prior to creation?
If SJU did not commission isn't it possible that the artist is merely trying to get paid here? Again, I may be way off base here and not trying to impugn the artist (before facts) but I have no idea how it works. I don't know how else to ask the question.

Separately, I have no problem with a statue. However, SJU should not be bashed here. The basketball court has already been named in his honor. It might be nice but to say it is heresy might be a little over the top.

I spoke to the school and will see if they need help getting this off the ground. They aren't to be bashed here at all.

You are right, typically a statue or painting is commissioned and is instructed as to how the honoree is to be depicted.

The issue is that Kaiser and Carnesecca want to be enshrined together if this is to happen. So it would be the cost of two statues. I hope that isn't private info, but there it is. Guys, please don't crap on that concept.

Think of a Medici Pope and Michelangelo.

Hi Guys,

I'm a art foundry owner and SJU alumni. I know this artist well. He's a character and a slick salesman. He actually produces most of his work in China.

If the school was ever interested in commissioning a statue of Louie, I could do it for half of what this guy charges and it would be made in Queens. I offered when the Lapchick statue was being made but I believe that they were already too far down the road with this guy.

I was at Fenway South, JetBlue Park, the spring training facility in Fort Myers for the Red Sox. They have kind of a garden with giant 3d numbers of retired players and a plaque for each as well. Then at the head appropriately, is a statue of Ted WIlliams with a young boy, instructing him. It would be great to have something like that here at SJU, with statues of our most notable coaches.

Well, considering this artist's Chinese ties, perhaps we could commission a statue of Harrington, Father.

PM me.

It appears that Beast and others , have obtained more info than what was originally disclosed on the first postings . Seems like a wee bit of chicanery by the Sculptor . Let me make the Statue first and then try and sell it to St John’s . If that fails , let me call the Newspaper and give them a story . Good work by several posters in getting the whole truth out .

I enjoyed the anecdotes of the other coaches and while I couldn't stand Tarkanian when he was alive, it is hard not to think back on him and other coaches from that generation with nostalgia and even admiration in some cases. Coaches today are just boring by comparison.

While I don't think $100k is necessarily out of line for a life sized bronze statue, seems like a local alum would be a first option regardless of price.
