@LeeHiggins: Ex-WCC basketball coach charged over bogus transcripts

One count accuses Mushatt of possessing a phony transcript which was submitted to a St. John's employee to fraudulently establish eligibility for a student to be enrolled and participate in athletics at St. John's.

So the kid's coach --not the registrar's office-- submitted the transcript directly to SJU? And we accepted that??

Desperate times call for desperate measures. :(

Let's just hope the guy doesn't say under-oath that our former coaching staff did anything improper.

Really, did you need to post this?

Why not?? i remember when the WCC story broke last year and i posted about it when Thomas wasn't yet implicated and people said the same thing then. And then look what happened. You never know.

By the way, hows that contract extension looking?

Very good story. Thanks. One thing struck me though. He says he doesn't really show his emotions, but he broke down and cried in the coaches office. I understand that though. Here you did all this work to get there, did the right things. Then you find out someone you trusted lied to you and then betrayed you which could have derailed everything you worked hard for. Not a place anyone would every want to be and the despair must have been incredible.

How common is it for a transcript to be submitted via parking lot exchange? It's hard to accept that the previous staff could not (at best) see red flags.

We're not North Carolina, so I sincerely hope we don't have to pay for this. Enduring Steve Lavin was painful enough. Please, no more Lavin pain.

I may be deluding myself, but I'll take solace in the fact that the young man never appeared in a game for us.

Right, they cannot sanction us for using an ineligible player in competition as he never played for us. Could they find something else, possibly, but fraud was committed by someone not involved in the program and apparently without our knowledge.

Ex-WCC coach sent 8 fake transcripts: indictment http://lohud.us/2adGcUc via @lohud @espn @sinow
I might be in the minority on this but to me it's ridiculous that the guy gets indicted on this and yet college coaches cheat all the time having their kids pass bs classes with not even showing up etc and nothing happens to them

I agree that we are likely on safe ground and I appreciate your use of the word "apparently". In reality, we all know Lavin was desperate and any marginally intelligent person could tell something was not kosher with the Keith Thomas situation. He, just like all the coaches who withdrew their recruitment, knew this kid was a long shot for eligibility.

You know what this team could use next season? Keith Thomas. Would be nice if he had spent the last two years retaking all his classes, and then could convince the NCAA that he had no clue his transcript was forged.
