Last 3 Scholarships

I'm sure there's a thread for this on the main board, but since I'm relegated here to the rookie board, assuming any one actually views this post, what would you like to do with the last 3 scholarships? The important thing to be mindful of is that we have no one coming off the books in 2017 right now, so unless some of the remaining scholarships are used on graduate transfers, if we fill all 3, we'll have no room left for 2017 recruits, and Mullin, Slice, Matt and Co. have a lot of hooks in the class of 2017.

My take is if you can get Justin Simon, you take him. He's a top-25 talent, he had a rough year at Arizona, on a very very talented team, that doesn't mean he lacks talent. Getting a top-25 talent for sure right now, at a "need" position, PG (yes we have LoVett, but depth would be nice), you have to take it.

After that, I would say the only non-grad transfer I would like to bring in is Kostas Antetokounmpo. Don't hold me to the spelling...or the pronunciation. I just love his size, and his length, and I think he'd develop into a very very good 4 year player as he fills out.

That leaves one scholarship left for a grad transfer, it seems the natural choice is Livingston. He has some baggage, but it's only one year. If he's out of line, you can suspend him, and let the young bucks get more experience.

It looks likely we get Kostas. I'm on the fence about whether Simon is coming or not. If either or both of those don't pan out, I say stick with Livingston and 2 other grad transfers (I'm not crazy about Marvin Clark). If we do land Kostas and Simon, that leaves just one slot open for 2017, for, HOPEFULLY, Jordan Tucker, Hamidou Diallo or Mohamed Bamba.

Thoughts?

Nice post and opinions Frank. You say we have hooks in '17 class while some others are saying things have gone quiet with 17 so hard to form steadfast opinions. I like Simon, Clarke, Kostas and Livingston or similar 5th yr transfer. Not worried about using all 13 schollies up now because there will likely be some attrition by the end of roster guys which would open 1 or 2 for 17 if we can land a stud.

Great post. I agree about Clark but Matt pursued him while at Iowa state so he has a relationship. Simon reminds me of Jamal Branch who was also a top 50 player. I would not take both unless 2017 is going down the toilet which would be bad on so many levels. My guess is a 5th year transfer, one eligible and one redshirt for next year. As Bam stated it could be likely a current player leaves next year so one 2017 recruit is not an issue.

I guess the question is do you think Simon and the Mich State kid will be better in 2 years than any of the players we have a chance of landing. Hope we get Livingston and it frees up a stole for 17. How hard would it be to get 1 good 17 recruit

Yeah, I'd like to see 2 guys, generally, in the 2017 class. So if we get Livingston or a similar grad transfer, and maybe lose 1 guy to attrition, I think that would be good. It's been a tough go for Mullin and Co. to balance the classes after the disaster that they inherited, so while it'd be nice to see more balance, there's only so much the coaching staff can do.

Also, not sure if anyone uses this site, but I love it. Think it's a good way to visualize depth, scholarships by year and targets:http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/st-john-s

Does anyone know what the status of Taurean Thompson is from the 2016 class.? He looks like he would have the size to be a good power forward on the Johnnies does anyone have an update on him?

I don't think we ever recruited him hard. Syracuse has been on him for a while. Seton Hall would love to land him in an upset.

Given my limited access, I would like to welcome Justin Simon and Marvin Clark to the St. John's basketball family. They should provide great competition in practices in 16-17 but getting a player with some skills will be critical for next year because flirting with .500 next year is not much to look forward to imo.
From here on out the recruiting staff has to be able to close and deliver on ready for prime time talent that will maintain a high level of attraction for future recruits. Great players want to be challenged by playing with other great players. The foundation has been laid but now we need to reel in the top targets earlier and not rely on transfers every year who may or may not contribute two years down the road. Slice was hired to build relationships with top 50 talent and hopefully it will start paying dividends in 2017. Getting a Diallo or Bamba would be nice. ;) Getting past the handlers is another story. Chiek Diallo, for example, would likely have raised his draft prospects higher had he played 20 minutes per game at St. John's than riding the pine at Kansas.

Why can't I post on the main forum? I've had the account for months now. What "qualifies" me to be able to post in the main forum?

I think you have to be Asian to be granted access to the main forum
