Last 0-3 Big East Team to make NCAA was...

1994 Seton Hall, yep 20 years ago, it's mentioned in the article below.

If you roll this conversation back three weeks, I had us at 8-11 wins and on the bubble if we hit 11. Given how the early schedule had us as underdogs three times, I won't waiver from my preseason call, and still think we can win the games we should win and if we get it going, win 11 games. It's hard to imagine that at 0-3, but there is plenty of season left. What's more disturbing is that our deficiencies are becoming apparent, and that troubles me a lot more than 0-3.

We may hit 11 wins, as in 11 overall wins :{

We will know by Thursday if you are right, maybe even Tuesday.

StJohns final regular season record will likely be something like 17 wins and 14 losses and 7 wins and 11 losses in the Big East Conference.

The good news is that StJohns may win the next 4 games against DePaul, Providence, Dartmouth and Seton Hall before heading on the road to Butler and Creighton.

Those are three of the five hardest contests on our 18 game Big East schedule. I count @Creighton and @Villanova as the next two. Lucky for us, we get Nova at the end of February. There is a big stretch of winnable games coming up. The next four, especially, are should-wins: @Depaul, then three straight at home against Providence, Dartmouth and Seton Hall. I think it is very realistic to go 9-3 in the next 12 games heading into the road game against Nova. We then close with three very winnable game: home against Xavier and Depaul, and the finale @Marquette.

The 2010-2011 team turned things around in the beginning of February at 11-8. If we don't by then it probably isn't happening, but let's at least give them the next four games before we call it a season.

Keep in mind, half of our losses have come to teams ranked in the top eight, with a combined record of 47-1 (only loss was to one of those three teams). Two came on the road to future NCAA tournament teams, and then there was Penn State on the missed Harrison FT.

Good post, but neither DePaul nor Providence are given as wins. They could lose either, or both, which would effectively end NCAA speculation. Both are among the handful of teams we would have to sweep to have a shot at 11-7. A plausible path to 11 wins is to sweep three teams, get swept by one, and split all others. Losing to either Providence or DePaul doesn't destroy that path, but makes the margin for error going forward at ZERO.

"So you're telling me there's a chance! Yeaaahhh!"

Could also have used the Jim Mora quote... "Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs? I'm just hoping we can win a game, another game."

College basketball is kind of in turmoil now. Last place in the ACC is North Carolina at 0 and 3. Duke is at 1 and 2. How about them apples, for wanting to kill the
Big East. Syracuse and Pitt, in first place. Powerhouse Penn State is in last place in the Big Ten at 0 and 4. Frazier and Newbill are non factors. By the way Penn State will be 0 and 6 at the end of the week. So much, for RPI builders.

I'd be thrilled if this team could win 9 of the next 12 but how is that possible when they shoot 35 per cent until crunch time and then drop it down to about 20 per cent. De Paul is probably salivating right now.

The only hope we have as fans of this team is, that they improve a little more each game and are some how hitting their stride come the Big East Tournament and then find a way to win that tournament. That is the only way this team makes the NCAA Tournament.

Spot on, Lavin should be done messing with lineups, roll with what you had yesterday, and hopefully by March they can take the tournament.

Only need to win three, maybe four games in the tournament depending on where we are in the standings.

Not impossible like it was in the old big east, we could win it if we improve by the end of the year.

That's my thinking exactly Jack. This not the old Big East. We played the best team yesterday and if we would have converted around the rim we would have won. we missed eight layups and lost by 7. I like playing the tournament on our home floor. Call me crazy D: but if we continue to improve incrementally each game it's not out of the realm of possibility. We won't have enough of a resume to get in any other way.
